I was in my local Boots earlier and was told about this. For the cost of one prescription charge (£7.40 or free if you get free prescriptions) you get a 6-8 week course including all the nicotine patches, gums, quick mist etc that you need included. Considering one pack of gum/patches can cost £20 odd I thought this was pretty good. All you need to do is go along for a quick appointment once a week.

Not all Boots run it but worth checking yours and see if they do and youre wanting to quit.

Something similar was run about a year ago but cost a bit more- http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/quit-smoking-with-boots-10-for-10-w/580090

This service has been available for at least a year now in all chemists in NI.

If you can afford to smoke then you can afford to buy your own patches and gum if you really want to give up!!

True, and I dont smoke, but why pay £20 a week for patches when you dont have to?

My point is NHS money could be spent better elswhere, not subsidising patches and gum... but that's the NHS for you!!

I stopped smoking 4 months ago. It is the best thing that's happened to me for a long time. Anything that encourages people to have a go at stopping is a good thing. Heat added.

My brother and father both died within the last three years from smoking and that wasn't enough on its own to get me to stop. I watched them both suffer and their quality of life was minimal. Two active men reduced to nothing.

Good luck to anybody who gives it a go.

If you are income support you can get nicotine products for free. most pharmacists will help you. just tell them the name of your GP and they will sign you up. My own recommendation however is Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking book. I started when i was twelve gave up and started again loads of times but since i read this its been five years not even a whiff !!

I object to my money being spent on weak willed smokers - but then again if it means the rest of us can sit outside at the pub in summer again ...................

Does this apply to Druggies, Alchololics and Obese people then???? The NHS that all working people contribute to is there to help and support EVERYONE. If they can help people quit smoking and save costs later on due to reducing smoking related illness then good for them.

Smoking is an addiction just like any other and is damn hard to quit, any help that can be given should be.

Free in Scotland. I Quit Feb 2010 with support from Boots.

Self imposed 'illness'.

The government get about £10 billion worths of tax on cigs each year, if people didnt smoke they would have to get that money elsewhere.
