Quo mapping software FREE, plus very reasonable prices for OS Digital mapping. 1:50,000 - 99p and 1:25,000 - £1.95. Register and download the mapping software and get a further 10% off.
Quo is really good for anyone who does any outdoor activity requiring maps. I am very impressed with it. Plot routes, print out maps, connect to Google Earth to view a route, download other peoples routes form web sites and plot them directly onto OS Maps.
Best of all you can transfer routes and maps to a dedicated GPS device, or alternatively you can use a Windows Mobile based PDA with external Bluetooth GPS. (£17 if you were quick enough for the Bluetooth GPS I posted with Play last week).

I was wating for the first person to say that! Yes and no lol. Yes the software is free but you need to buy some os maps to make it worth having!!

It's just a lock-in thing. The maps cost the money and I suspect they only work in this software which looks like it has no export facilities. OS maps are great but there are serious intellectual property and licensing issues. See the guardians free our data campaign. If you want free maps check out open street map and open source GIS software. Just Google for it and you will find lots of software, data and help.

Yes it would be nice to get free OS maps I agree, but for now OS stitch up the rights and you have to live with it or don't use them. Yes the maps cost the money but can you find OS maps for less? I have had a look at Open Street Map just very basic mapping useless for walking or mountain biking.

Why not just use google?

Go to google and type two destination with 'to' in between and it will bring up the map with directions....

eg maps.google.co.uk/map…=wl

This is akin to buying a music CD to play on a Panasonic cd player and then having to buy the music again if you change to a Sony player. It's crazy but OS have us over a barrel, there is no alternative certainly not in the form of suggestions posted here regarding Google maps and open source mapping.

Why do people expect things for free just because they are on a copmputer hard drive? You wouldn't expect to get free detailed OS paper maps.

The internet is liberating and democratising, but it also breeds cheapness and pirating.

P.S. It's not the OS at fault, but the lack of standards for computer based cartography.

I love being a GIS student and having free access to all of OS's data

You miss the point google maps are not very detailed, you couldn't use them for walking etc and they don't have the functions of Quo. Obviously no one goes out walking cycling, birdwatching etc nowadays!

I don't mind paying for maps but I'd like to use them in any software I choose. It's just like doberman says. Different uses need different types and qualities of map. For some purposes Google maps or Open Street map might be just the job.
