Rab Ascent 700 Down 3-4 Season Sleeping Bag - £145 @ Ultimate Outdoors with code 'SAVE30'

Bit of a niche item, but those who know about camping gear will appreciate this.

Quality down sleeping bag, with hydrophobic down. Weight is 1.29kg, with a comfort limit of -2.0ºC (recommended lowest temp for women according to EN13537:2012) and a lower comfort limit of -8.5ºC (recommended lowest temp for men).

Down sleeping bags are both lighter and significantly warmer for the weight than cheaper synthetic bags, and hence are popular for backpacking. As an example comparison with a very cheap, entry level synthetic bag, the Eurohike Adventurer 200 offered by Ultimate Outdoors is marginally heavier in weight but only has a comfort limit of +8ºC so could only be used in the summer, whereas this can be used pretty much all year round anywhere in the UK.

Use code SAVE30 (£30 off spend over £130) to take £30 off the marked price. This code expires on 18/12.

The Womens version (same temp specs but shorter, slightly lighter and purple rather than blue) is also available at the same price.

Possible 2.1% cashback with TopCashback as well.

If you happen to live near to one of the six branches of Ultimate Outdoors, then this is also available in store (Blacks & Millets don't count, as even though they are part of the same group they don't stock Rab sleeping bags).

UPDATE: 18/12

The Mens version is no longer available online, but may be available in store. The Womens versionis still available. Discount code expires at midnight.

Cold. What a sexist thing to assume women feel the cold more than men. …Cold. What a sexist thing to assume women feel the cold more than men. Can’t believe I’m 2017 women are still being treated differently to men!

Can't tell if this is sarcasm, or if you're being serious!

I hope to god that’s a joke. If it’s not, what a ridiculous thing to say.

Believe it or not, men and women are genetically different.

If this gets voted cold, RAB have a problem
I’ve had one of these for 5 years and it cost me £220 from Tiso. This is extremely cheap and a bargain at this price - hot from me

That's how retailers and manufacturers generally recommended interpreting the numbers provided by the EN13537 standard tests - use the comfort limit for women, and the lower comfort for men. Checking the standard itself, it assumes that a "standard female" can sleep comfortably in a "relaxed" position at the comfort limit, and a "standard male" can sleep without waking in a "curled up" position. Both assume a tent, sleeping pad and thermal underwear (and that people come in fixed standard sizes!). Really the EN13537 values are just guidelines that are helpful for comparisons and a rough idea of when you could use a given bag,
Not a sleeping bag expert but wouldn't this be too warm in a British summer?
I'm not sure that "too warm" and "British summer" belong in the same sentence.

Haha because physically, physiologically and mentally both sexes are the same right!
This isn't bad at all, excellent price. However 650 fill power is relatively low and is why it is heavier and has a larger pack size than many competitors. Winter sleeping bags are really important to get right, it's not something I plan to cheap out on, I have my heart set on an alpkit pipedream which covers my criteria of quality, low weight, pack size and all UK temperatures. I wouldn't mind a snugpak softie either.

'A sexist thing to say' is to make a remark based upon untrue aspects (physical or mental) of men or women as a gender

Exactly. That’s why men and women race against one another in the olympics and why men box women in the ring.

Oh wait, that’s another universe, perhaps the planet this person comes from.

This model is meant for/more suited to autumn/winter use, so if we get a decent, hot, summer then possibly, but you can always leave it partially or fully unzipped if you get too hot.

If you can get to a branch then there may be summer Rab bags available that aren't listed online - I picked up a Neutrino 200 for £120 at my local branch (I believe the only they had), which is definitivley a summer bag
What's the deal? I mean, if you can afford £145 for a single sleeping bag, why don't you just sleep in the back of the Range Rover with the heating on?

Getting a good night's sleep outdoors in the winter is important. If looked after properly, it will last many years, 100's of nights, down lasting about twice as long as synthetics. If you are trekking, you need something small and light to fit in a bag, and that costs more. It's about the cost of a couple of nights stay in a holiday Inn. There are so many hobbies out there that cost considerably more to maintain, don't have other benefits such as fitness, and don't teach you valuable skills. For me, if this sleeping bag was the only option and cost £1000, it would be worth every penny. You really need more of an understanding of the materials they use and why it has a higher price tag than your local decathlons £5 bargain bin bag.

It's a niche item as stated. If you can't understand it's value then it's obviously not for you.
As prices go for this item, it's a good price.
I have the Rab Ascent 500 and find it a tad too warm in the summer but the OH is a cold sleeper and it's too cold for her.
Hard to recommend a sleeping bag to someone as we're all different.
Rab Nesbitt's sleeping bag?! Uhhh...no thanks. What a rip off!
Is it any good for caterpillar races

That pipedream looks quite nice, am looking to replace my warm but heavy Nepal bought down sleeping bag.

How do you think the pipedream compares to the PHD minim 500, currently on sale, or the Mountain Equipment phantom flame I found on offer recently as well, do you have any thoughts on those?

Those are both very good bags from reputable companies, they standout from the pipedream because of their higher fill power. My only concern here is that from experience I do not trust the standard temperature rating system, it says -10 but expect to be cold before then, make sure you give yourself leeway, I see certain features have been removed to reduce weight. For the quality, weight and pack size though, they are difficult to beat. Alpkit use their own temperature system, which I've found to be near enough perfect, the pipedream 600 being -12 would cover me in the very north where -10 and lower is common. You could say I've built up a trust in alpkit products, in that they do what they say they do, where other brands have let me down.

This is why I didn’t talk about gender...but medically speaking both sexes are different Male and Female. Your physical, physiological and mental makeup does not change just because you choose to identify as a certain gender.

It's getting ridiculous here
I can see the time when all male public lavatories will be knocked down as sexist. All references to male and female everywhere will be replaced with 'person' Maybe the third person singular will be reduced to 'it'. Goodness know what the French will do.

Person is a much better way to refer to somebody than he or she if you are not sure how they identify. Also without knowing what pronouns someone likes to use it is quite offensive to use he or she

Then you can you use 'it', that used to be offensive, when people 'thought' they were simply either male or female!
