The brackets on the poundland ones are rubbish and very poor quality

You'll eat the batteries with a halogen light. You're better off spending slightly more on a far better light at Chain Reaction or Wiggle on front led light. It'll only cost you a couple of quid more and you'll get free P&P

Forget halogen - its like fitting a gas lamp in your house.

The current standard of bike lights is LED and rechargeable batteries.

depends what you're using it for. Halogen is the standard for night riding, Even Cree LED isn't used yet LED is better as a 'see mee' rather than 'see'. light.

Front Lamp
One is required, showing a white light, positioned centrally or offside, up to 1500mm from the ground, aligned towards and visible from the front. If capable of emitting a steady light it must be marked as conforming to BS6102/3 or an equivalent EC standard. If capable of emitting only a flashing light, it must emit at least 4 candela.

Rear Lamp
One is required, to show a red light, positioned centrally or offside, between 350mm and 1500mm from the ground, at or near the rear, aligned towards and visible from behind. If capable of emitting a steady light it must be marked as conforming to BS3648, or BS6102/3, or an equivalent EC standard. If capable of emitting only a flashing light, it must emit at least 4 candela.

Make sure they meet the standards!

I have two Smart Polaris LED headlights at the front, but have them set to flash, and two Cateye Hl-EL500 LED headlights, With these I can cycle on the unlit roads near my house after dark with no problems at all averaging about 16/18mph. Cars often slow to see what the unusual lighting is,

Rears are two Cateye TL-LD1100 LEDs which are brighter than any other tail lights I have seen. These are bright enough to flash noticeably even during the day.

I feel two sets of back lights are safer on unlit roads, as you have no way of knowing if a rear light has failed until it is potentially too late.

They are powered by 16 x rechargeable AA 2500mAh batteries, so have very low running costs.
