Part of Amazon's deal of the day - been after this book for a little while, and at 99p I dived right in.

Here's the blurb from Amazon:

"SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE DIRECTED BY STEVEN SPIELBERG

It's the year 2044, and the real world has become an ugly place. We're out of oil. We've wrecked the climate. Famine, poverty, and disease are widespread.

Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes this depressing reality by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia where you can be anything you want to be, where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets. And like most of humanity, Wade is obsessed by the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this alternate reality: OASIS founder James Halliday, who dies with no heir, has promised that control of the OASIS - and his massive fortune - will go to the person who can solve the riddles he has left scattered throughout his creation.

For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that the riddles are based in the culture of the late twentieth century. And then Wade stumbles onto the key to the first puzzle.

Suddenly, he finds himself pitted against thousands of competitors in a desperate race to claim the ultimate prize, a chase that soon takes on terrifying real-world dimensions - and that will leave both Wade and his world profoundly changed."

Loved this. The audiobook narrated by Will Wheaton is excellent too.

Better to listen to this on audible IMO

if you liked the book, definitely check out The Punch Escrow by Tal M Klein

Beat me to it. Fantastic read.

I really enjoyed this, hoping the movie does it justice.

Seems unlikely unfortunately. It's going to be so watered down.

I read the book after hearing about the film but doubt I will go and see that.
It worked as a good advert for the book though.

Bought it as soon as I saw my email from Amazon, have wanted to give this a read for ages, then saw this deal posted. Heat added, has been recommended to me by lots of people.

Really enjoyed the book, and cant wait for the movie to come out soon!

Bought this a few days ago as part of their 3 paperbacks for £10 promotion

Recommended!

I can't wait to start reading it. I just love the concept.

I love the bit where he just list stuff over and over and over and ove......
It's a badly written book with a good story hiding inside.

Great book! Loads of 80s references! Highly recommend this!

Only book ive read in 30 years, loved it, cant wait for the film

Been waiting for this to be on offer for ages! Thanks op

99p on Google Play too.

Thanks. Heat given 👌

99p on Google Play too.

Beat me by a second... Bought from Play, thanks

Nice one, ordered & heated.

Paid £5 for this (sure it was from Amazon Instant Video credit) - didn’t regret it though. I reckon the film will be tough, there’s so much 80s pop video game culture in it, getting licensing will be most of the budget!

Awesome book!

Thanks for the deal, hot from me.

Great book! Cline's second book 'Armada' is pretty good too.

Great book!!! Audiobook is fantastic. I hope the movie will be decent, but anxious as with all adaptations to the big screen!

Sounds like a sword art online rip off going by the blurb.

Good book, my 11yo son's fave ever, but I found the main character really bloody annoying and the 80s references overdone. For 99p you can't really go wrong. For younger readers, this also has unnecessary sexual references that feel shoehorned in to make the book feel more adult.

Thanks all. I’ve taken a punt on the audiobook.

Bought the paper back version months ago at £5, really good book. Worth 99p of anyone's money.

Fantastic book, incredibly ahead of its time as well, the guy had such a vision for virtual reality back then.

If you haven't watched the trailer, DONT! Read this first.

Good read, bought the paperback full price a while back. Heat added

It won't, prepare to be disappointed. I'm still getting over the Enders Game film.

The movie is going to have a different plot, but around the same structure. I don't want to elaborate as I wouldn't want to spoil the book!

But yeah, while related/having the same general ingredients and characters, it isn't going to recreate RPO the book on the big screen. Absolutely agree that the Audible version is cracking too.

Also, Heat!

My favourite book of all time. As has been said, the audiobook is also fantastic. You can tell from his performance that Wil Wheaton loves the book and is thoroughly enjoying reading it. Highly recommended!

half way through great book cant wait for the film.

A sci-fi book for people that don't like sci-fi or books!!

This guy is a really poor writer and the story just relies on pop culture nostalgia.
His other book is just a rip off of The Last Starfighter.

Somewhat agree. Alot of references and unneeded references and explanations too (l33t speech, one example), and yeah it dwells on nostalgia a fair amount but that aside still a fun read especially if you do get the references and have an interest in the genre.

Kobo are price matching in case anyone has a kobo e-reader ( like me).

You make it sound like it was written in the early 1900s, the book was released in 2011 and there were already many books, TV shows and films which featured a similar story. Sword Art Online for one which was released in 2009.

Original Poster

I gotta check out this Sword Art Online...
