I was about to buy this cheap Stratocaster last week and they've reduced the price even more, so I got one to fit my spare Texas Special set. I can't find this exact model in Fender's webpage but the reviews are okay. Good entry level guitar, and with a couple of mods you can get great Strat tones. Specs:

  • Full size 42in electric guitar .
  • Bolt-on construction.
  • Hardwood body.
  • Maple neck.
  • Chrome hardware.
  • 21 frets.
  • Nickel strings.
  • 3 single coil pick ups.
  • 5-way pick up selector switch.
  • Tone control.
  • Volume control.
  • Guitar strap fixings.
  • Includes free online guitar lessons.

People are sniffy about squire, but modern manufacturing means these are playable out of the box, this is a remarkable price for any guitar from a major manufacturer (and yes, I do have a fender custom shop telecaster, but would still recommend this deal)
Let's put it this way, you can bet it is better than the first guitars used by Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton or Jeff Beck........so, no pressure

For this money. A steal. Often it's the final setting up that lets these fine guitars down. Even a layman with enthusiasm and YouTube can up their playability for often no cost

Perfect to find out what you prefer and then switch to a guitar of your choice once you get some skills.

It is a Stratocaster though so if you're mainly into metal, go for something else.
Superb deal.

This is likely to be the Bullet Strat model. They've got really good reviews. Superb quality for the price they are and absolutely ideal starter guitars. Cheap Chinese factory models we're awful 20 years ago, but they're really not at all these days.

Good price.

They're fine for learning, they're playable, the one I had; the cheap wiring / electrics let it down badly. The selector switch was dodgy, so there was sometimes no output.

I sold that and now use a cheap Epiphone, which I rate much better all round.

Squier guitars are pretty well made these days. Even pros use them.
🔥thanks for posting! sorry hijacking deal but does anyone have any advice on one with a ‘humbucker’? (learnt a new word while investigating them for my 12yr old who’s after an electric guitar!) plus - is the amp quality more important?? thank you! x

Agreed, an epi is a better guitar, but around twice the price

Get an epiphone les Paul for humbucker sounds, 129 from guitarguitar

Quite. But let's be fair we aren't comparing like for like models, this guitar is the bottom of the squire chain.

The 'Classic Vibe' series, for instance, blows guitars twice the price tag away.

How about a Jackson JS11 Dinky. Very well priced here - andertons.co.uk/guitar-dept/electric-guitars/modern-body-guitars/jackson-js11-dinky-rosewood-fretboard-22-fret-in-white-w-amaranth-board - especially if your boy is more into rock and/or metal. Don't think you'll beat this Squier deal on price though.

Thanks. Although I just remembered that I have an epiphone Les Paul junior lying around. How's that compare?

The Epiphone is similar class, but definitely a different sound due to different wood and humbucker pickups rather than single coils. The Squier will sound brighter, lighter compared to any Les Paul

Think Red Hot Chilli Peppers compared to Guns N Roses.

Oh and Les Pauls have a very simple tune-o-matic bridge which is a pleasure when you have to change strings or set up the guitar. Definitely recommend for a beginner. Tremolos are fun but hard to maintain.

I bought one of these about 6 months ago, but it went back to Argos a few days later. Spent a lot of time trying tweaking it to get it to remain in tune up the fretboard but had to admit defeat on it. Might just has been the unit I got but I thought I'd go back to the drawing board and do some more research. A bit disappointed really as I thought it would have been better, but then again you get what you pay for and it's at the cheap end.
My sons got one of these, what modifications would you recommend?

I recommend not to spend money on upgrading it. Difference will be minimal and cost very high compared to value of the guitar. If he likes to play, buy him something more adequate.

Solid guitar for the money, great for beginners. Fun to upgrade the pickups as well when your guitar collection grows.
Anyone got a recommendation of a small amp to pair with this? I assume the ones that come in the packs are always rubbish
Great deal. Better buy this and a decent amp than those crappy little bundles you get.
Also is this a bullet? Doesn’t clarify on the Argos site
This is a must to improve the playability of all guitars, specially the cheaper ones:

Pretty good. Worth looking at yamaha pacifica models too, as they are great value beginner guitars.
