Came in to post this. I think it's just outrageous the trainline basically just preys off the ignorant. Go through nationrail and book direct with the train company. There's no booking fee and they'll even post you the tickets if you don't want to waste time getting them from a machine!
Or even use the Virgin Trains booking pages.

very cold for Booking Fees
Or try split ticketing can be even cheaper
As others have said, there is absolutely no reason to get ripped off by booking fees by Trainline when purchasing train tickets.
cold cold cold cold cold cold REALLY COLD cold cold cold cold cold cold cold cold cold (Spot the odd one out).
to be honest though, I quite like the app, the push message telling me platforms was worth the 25p booking fee alone.... in honesty I tried to book through a no fee train operator site but it was blocked on works computers, the train line site wasn't so work paid for the fee and tickets but it did allow me to test the app. do the other sites have comparible apps?
I book all my trains via grand central and every few weeks I get sent a 20% off code on future bookings, free first class delivery as well, far cheaper
