If an app then needs a version of the OS that is the current version it wont run. There is a new version each month for those interested.

Don't just take my word for it it is on the Google website:

    Auto Update policy
OverviewChrome devices (e.g. Chromebook, Chromebox, Chromebase, Chromebit) receive automatic updates that enhance both the device and its software. Device updates provide the latest features and keep the device secure, and are applied across the operating system, browser and hardware. These updates depend on many device specific non-Google hardware and software providers that work with Google to provide the highest level of security and stability support. For this reason, older Chrome devices cannot receive updates indefinitely to enable new OS and browser features.Policy
    • Every ChromeOS device receives regular updates from Google until it reaches its Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date, listed below, subject to support from component manufacturers. When a device reaches AUE, automatic software updates from Google will no longer be provided.
    • ChromeOS devices that have not reached their AUE date will continue to receive OS updates and function with Chrome Education Upgrade and Chrome Enterprise Upgrade. After the AUE date is reached, existing and future policies may not work as intended, and technical support will not be provided.
    • Google will publish a model’s AUE date on this page after its release, giving buyers time to make purchase decisions. Please check the AUE date when making a purchasing decision.

If you don't need a charger (as can use Android phone USB C charger to charge slowly when off) and are happy with another Grade B, I'd get the Dell 3100 with double the storage (at 32GB) and the newer N4020 processor and ChromeOS update life to June 2027 for ~£8 more - hotukdeals.com/dea…260 (edited)
Posted an emulation video on your deal, looks decent, shame about the lack of charger

I was gifted one of these, please do yourselves a favour and DO NOT BUY. It can only handle the most basic of basic of web browsing. Youtube will play at 1080p, but you'll get choppiness. Google docs is laggy. It's frustrating to use.

Being honest, if you got this for free - it's not too bad as an emergency laptop however I would not pay for one. Your mobile phone does a better job.

If you want to punish someone, give them this.
    What have I done.

i like chromebooks... they start up really fasts compared to windows. also the battery lasts looooong time. you can do browsing, youtube, basic excel etc on chromebook with ease.
everyone in our family got one... this is cheap. 4gb ram looks good. (edited)
Seconded. Plus you don't need the hassle of virus software to worry about.

The 16gb HDD is the deal breaker here.
Chromebooks barely even need storage, it’s not a dealbreaker by any means. I don’t think I’ve ever stored anything on the local drive and only USB or SD media (like films) if I needed to.

Love my little old Chromebook. Just nice and simple and compatible with all Google stuff. I use it when I need a bigger screen. (Middle aged boring mum speaking!)

How long is the os support on this? (edited)

The only negative I have with a chrome book is that it can be a bit tricky to print from. Otherwise I find them great.

it might be worth it, if you could install a light version of Linux or Chrome OS Flex on there. Not sure whether these allow you boot off other devices and reinstall another OS.
It is possible although you may need to take it apart and unscrew a screw, thats all
  13. Avatar
You want just to use it as stream player, reply emails and Google docs.... This is your computer, 200£ for a Chromebook never will have sense

Is this the cheapest way to just look at pictures in Google Photos?
    Use your phone

Be full before you know it 16GB ridiculous
Why, what would you store on it? Its a browser based operating system?

    4k screen?

Does this actually have a touch screen ?
No, generally in a fixed form factor like this a touchscreen isn't that useful, if the screen could flip back on itself, it's probably of more use. Anyway this is cheap because support ended in June 2022. (edited)

    shocking, dont buy!

I need something cheap to watch "stuff" on without worrying about viruses if I accidentally click on a link, will this be smooth enough that I can enjoy the content?
Yes, should be fine, as long as you are aware about the AUE expiry that others have mentioned.

Wondering how Ubuntu or Mint would run on this
It's listed here, which suggests you can get linux onto it.

I think I read that there were issues with audio with mint. There is info about getting Arch linux onto it here:

I think I'd be more inclined to look at flex os I saw a support list earlier that suggested the Dell Latitude 3180 is ok with flex until 2028 - but I suspect that is different hardware to this?

Anybody know if these are decent for installing Linux on?
