Can someone help me work out if this is good. The processor has a very high mark on cpubenchmark.
I am ok with cosmetic damage.
I do not care for 4k.
It has SSD
4GB RAM is low but I will double to 8.

It this good for say some light video editing not 4K editing?

Avoid!!!!! Purchased off these cowboys. HP envy turned up with coffee stains inside the rambay and on the motherboard! Refurbished to them is hdd wipe, that is all!

That processor was launched in 2012. So potentially 5 years of abuse. I doubt the 'refurbishment' is anything more than a dust and clean. You get what you pay for...

Next to all the things everyone else has said
It's not even a 1080p screen, not even HD
So even with light video editing, you won't be seeing the full quality of your work so I don't see the point

It's quite old but still decent, QM means plenty of grunt. It will get quite hot though under strain, a laptop cooler and you will be good.

Seems legit...

DV6 were known for overheating if I remember right. I wouldn't touch a 5 year old laptop personally... but each to their own.

Looks like it's a proper 4 physical cores plus 4 virtual.... Total 8 cores....

All the new i7's are dual physical cores.... Hence score very low on bench marks

Nope, Intel are still making proper quad cores for laptops (hyperthreading doesn't generally matter btw, nowhere near as much gain as adding more physical cores). Only thing that's changed is the model number, it used to be anything ending QM was a quad core, it's now anything ending HQ. The reason you're seeing what you're seeing is that core i7 is now slapped on parts with a power consumption from 45W (full quads) to ~28W (highest speed dual cores) down to 4.5W at the very lowest end (slow dual cores that boost hard). Performance scales pretty linearly with power consumption.

Fast laptop however I have 2 customers with these and I have to disassemble rebapply thermal paste and rebuild once a year as they overheat and then you get thermal throttling and they run really slow

Yes, DV6 was certainly not an EliteBook. And for a QM quad core i7, you really want very good cooling.
I would touch an 5 year old laptop (in fact that's what I have here: a used ThinkPad T530 and T430u), however only if it is a used business class laptop not some poorly made consumer laptop like the DV6.

Problem is that if you want a 15.6" quad core laptop, an Elitebook 8570p or Thinkpad T530 with a QM processor is going to cost you a lot more.

oos

Today, I think I'll buy a 5 year old laptop off of a bunch of cowboys on ebay.

That sounds like a great plan.

No, really.

You say you dont care for 4K but ts not even FHD haha

Stay away. I owned one of these, constantly over heats. I had to buy a cooler mat and even that only worked for a hour or so. Stay away.

dv series to be avoided (over 15 years experience in cleaning and changing thermal paste on them). if you gonna buy an hp laptop, buy one from a business line

Don't know about this laptop, but bought several devices from the seller. Always been great. And easy return if you are not happy with them.

I would stay away from Hp, I had 2 both had problems.

I've never liked their table sauce either, cold from me.

That is an ancient laptop...

My five year old Dell has similar spec but with more RAM and upgraded SSD!

the processor might be an i7 but it's probably only equivalent to the latest i3.

i think for how much they're asking you would be better off with new i3 (maybe with HD screen if you get a bargain).

Bought a refurb off these ebay sellers 6 months ago... last week screen died... have had to buy a new one to replace it. That was just 1 issue.

I've used this company before a few times. For the money you can't beat it. Obviously having an i7 in such an old laptop is a bit counter-intuitive but it's barely any more expensive than the older i5 variants which have always worked well in my experience. SSD is vital and graphics card a plus.

Off topic, but I have a Pavilion m6 (i3 CPU) and I think my thermal paste needs redoing (CPU runs 50-60degC peaks at 80degC when loaded). What should I pay to have the past reapplied?

If it helps I still have a Dell XPS l502 with a i72630qm it runs very fast still better than most modern CPUs but an SSD is helping.

I posted a deal for one of those xps' years back. I've also got one and is ironically running very well. It's a tank. Other much newer laptops have died a death, including a 2 and a half year old XPS 15. Dell couldn't repair it (after 3 attempts) so it went back for a full refund a few weeks back.

We'll likely about £45 it requires completely disassembling the entire laptop so can take about 1 hour

Screen quality will be shocking. Not even HD.
