I think this isn't a bad deal considering you get 4GB RAM instead of 2GB and a CPU more powerful than the usual Intel Celeron N3060. Comes with US keyboard but this is easily changed in the language settings.

The Celeron 1037u is an ivybridge based dual core CPU from 2013 - they're not too bad and just about play full HD movies and ok for basic chores.

For the same price I bought an excellent refurbished Thinkpad E130, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, running Linux Mint beautifully, much better than that crap Chrome OS!

Linux Peppermint OS is more comparable to Chrome OS because of the cloud integration. (I'm running Mint in a Virtual box VM on W10.)

That crap OS is infinitely easier & friendlier for the great unclean to use & manage!

Passmark is 1398, hardly better than the Celeron N3060 that the OP mentioned so definitely getting towards the potato side of slow, ChromeOS is quick, so for basic stuff this is more than capable >

cpubenchmark.net/cpu…GHz

For £109 meh.
Got an X220 for home use and when I really need something a bit better (not that it's new) - but I'd like a light, semi-capable, powerpack free beater for carrying around daily - would this suit the bill? What's the battery life likely to be?

And could I put linux on it...?

I owned a Acer R11 chromebook with a N3060 and I always think to myself if only the CPU was 30-50% more powerful it would be perfect. You need to understand the chromeboook market. Most chromebook come with 2GB RAM and if you want the 4GB variant you would normally have to pay £50-80 more for the upgrade. So what I said before ''isn't a bad deal considering you get 4GB RAM instead of 2GB and a CPU more powerful than the usual Intel Celeron N3060'' I'm sticking by.

I do understand the Chromebook market, it's why as an IT refurbisher we don't sell them to retail, because retail don't want them because of the huge amount of returns, so we only sell Chromebooks to trade. I've sold 10,000 computers to retail over the last 7 years, I guarantee you retail don't want Chromebooks.

I'm fully aware you refurbish computers for a living but you don't know chromebooks that well. This chromebook is a 4GB RAM and not the 2GB version. If this was 2GB version I wouldn't have posted up this deal.
''I think this isn't a bad deal considering you get 4GB RAM instead of 2GB and a CPU more powerful than the usual Intel Celeron N3060'' is a spot on description.
I like Chromebooks and have had two. I think the 4GB is close to essential. Ideally, you'd also have a nice HD screen. With that combo they're really good day to day workhorse machines when used properly, i.e. you don't buy a 2Gb option for editing movies for cinema ;-) Heat applied ...

OK that's fair enough, no issues with that. I think it's more productive to tell people the pros and cons regarding Chromebooks. Here's mine >

Pros:

Very quick boot time, under 10 seconds usually.
Very fast for web browsing. As essentially ChromeOS is a web browser first before anything else
Security
Eventual Google Play Store support see > chromium.org/chr…pps

and > support.google.com/chr…273

Cons:

Skype - there's workarounds. I'm not up to date as to whether it works from Google Play Store
iTunes - techjunkie.com/itu…ok/

X240. Going to be way more capable than this. I got mine for £150 with free postage. Works like a dream, and if you're a bit handy, you can do a BIOS mod to remove the whitelist, and it'll make a slightly heavier HackBook Air-ish.

You can get an X240 for that money?! Christ. I want the proper keyboard tho...
Warning to anyone considering purchasing this chromebook it is about to reach end of life support it's Chrome OS Auto Update Expiration date is June 2018 this means after this date google will not guarantee that the device will receive future updates to chrome os on this device. Googles explanation of this: When a device reaches Auto Update Expiration (AUE), it means that the product model is considered obsolete and automatic software updates from Google are no longer guaranteed.
