Notes IBM's long-lasting ThinkPad T40/T41/T42 series combines a svelte, thin-and-light chassis with Intel's Pentium M processor, the 855PM chipset and a choice of wireless adapters. Choosing Intel's PRO/Wireless adapter (as fitted in our review sample) makes your T40 a true Centrino notebook. The ThinkPad T40/T41/T42 also offers a dual-band, 802.11a/b antenna; an excellent keyboard; and wafer-thin swappable modules. It's not the fastest Pentium M notebook we've tested, but it's a business traveller's dream nonetheless: an extra-thin system with superb battery life if you buy the bigger of the two batteries. Those who crave more speed should consider another Pentium M notebook, the Dell Inspiron 1501, but businesses who add the ThinkPad T40/T41/T42 to their line up can rest assured that they're getting an exceptional notebook. It's an Editors' Choice winner, despite its relatively steep price.

Hi all, I ordered a so called refurbished laptop from bigpockets last month, however i sent it back as there were scratches all over the exterior and the keyboard was so warn you could not make out the letters. This might be an isolated case, but I would not order one myself. Aparently the pcworld and currys refurbs are much better.

Refurbished
Items will be used but will have been professionally refurbished to the Manufacturers standard. They will be warranted for typically between 3-6 Months.

Used
Items will be used, but will have been thoroughly cleaned and tested by ourselves. They may have minor cosmetic scuffs or marks but will be in full working order, Used Items typically carry a 30 or 90 Day Return to Base Warranty from ourselves.

Hi again, this exactly what i was saying, if are exterior scratches then it should be advertised as used not refurbished.

Note the wireless spec in the 'Notes' section on the specifications tab.

"The ThinkPad T40/T41/T42 also offers a dual-band, 802.11a/b antenna;"

It would be worth checking whether this is indeed 802.11 a/b or whether it has (or can be) been upgraded to 802.11g wireless spec.

Second hadn used, busted and patched up tat! :-(

Have people not seen the price of a new machine these days?

The laptops are in very good condition with no worn off keys. If you're not happy we will collect it and give you a full refund as with any of our laptops or pcs. We can even exchange it free of charge if you're not happy. Whichever you prefer.

Hardly a deal breaker, a/b is still perfectly adequate, it's not as if it has 10baseT instead of ethernet!

I just thought it was a good sign we are confident of the quality, and if we are wrong you won't lose out anything apart from maybe a few pence interest.

If you don't want one don't order

My T41 has a/b/g wireless and 10/100/1000 ethernet so I'm presuming the range does.

As i said earlier bigpockets, i did send the laptop back and by the way, the keys were so worn I could not make out what each key represented.

What's the battery life like under normal conditions (with WiFi enabled)?

Great price for an IBM.

Any warranty?

I got around 2 hours from my T41 but some reviews suggest over 4 hours so I think it really depends on the condition of the battery.

Yes, and it is an OLD one, of indeterminate life and condition :-(

Would this be a better deal ? Dell D610 Centrino 1.6Ghz Laptop £179.99
512mb of ram rather than the 1gb as above but this has the bigger processor

Not a great deal in my opinion.

It shouldn't of been sent out like that, I hold my hands up to that. I'm sorry for the inconvenience we caused you.

What I wrote was meant generally about returning laptops for a full refund. Even if you don't like the look of it, it doesn't have to have a fault.

Oli

Come on, give Oli a break

I think they really try to offer a good customer service

Every day of the week IMO. You could probably pick up a cheap stick from … Every day of the week IMO. You could probably pick up a cheap stick from Ebay or something...The IMB laptop is just so ugly. It looks like something from the 90's! The next model down doesn't even have a trackpad ffs

You guys must live on fantasy island. IBM are the best quality laptops you can buy. They may not be the latest trendiest laptops (in your opinion) but they are the best quality by a long way. You need to work out what's important when it comes to a laptop, the pro's all use IBM's ....... the rest of you should probably stick with one who's colour doesnt clash with your toy box

BTW, my T42 has 8011a/b not g, so 8011g is not a standard fit. To upgrade requires a compatible 8011g mini-pci card (£5 on eBay), a bios patch (easily available) and the appropriate drivers.

Out of interest, what in your opinion is the next model down as the T40/41/42 range come with a trackpad and a mousepoint.

IBM all the way, I can't believe someone even said a D600 was better than a T series Thinkpad.
Theres nothing wrong with the Thinkpad design, its easily recognisable and distinguished. Built to last and they got it right. I used to have a T series and loved it. Now I have a NC series Compaq and its a great laptop also but not as sleek as the Thinkpads are. I'd love a hi-end Thinkpad, one of the "P" with high resolution screen. Still not a bad price for the Thinkpad, although I think £150 would have made it even better!

I wouldn't have one of these, if they were brand new at that price, let alone re-furb !

take it from me they are poor, save your money, a brand new dell vostro on offer is not much more

My housemate owns that Dell and my friend owns a T41.
It's laughable that you even compare them! The Dell is a beast, and not in a good way!
The T41, despite its 'old' styling is a very nice laptop and pretty slim too, not to mention very well built and good quality - unlike that Dell.

I think the temperatures reflect this, except maybe this deal should be a bit hotter.

Whats that supposed to mean? That your opinion is worth more than others?

I know what are the most reliable brands and what are built best,
the best are toshiba, the worst are fujitsu, closely followed by ibm (now lenovo)

but hey if you want a stinkpad go for it

Well there we go. Your opinion vs mine.

My mate had a Toshiba and he had nothing but problems with it. He must have had the mobo replaced about 3 times! ...and then he spilt beer on it so it had to be replaced again! Then the repair shop was robbed and that POS was finally gone!
Ok that last bit isn't related to Toshiba, but it's completely true and rather humorous.

My brother currently has 2 IBM's and had at least 2 others and never had a problem with them.
He sold one to a friend and that one is still running perfectly despite being on 24/7.
Like I mentioned above, my mate has a T41 and it's going strong after 4 or so years.
