So if it a short trip, you can go to Bucharest, I will say an ok price to stay is IBIS by the train station (Gara de Nord). You can visit from there Piata Unirii, Piața Romană, Piața Universității, all 3 link with each other and The Old Town (Centrul vechi) is there too. Carul cu Bere is a restaurant you should not miss, Hanul lui Manuc as well.
If you want something a bit different, try Transylvania. Take the train from Gara de Nord to Brasov, but get off Sinaia, about 1.5h from Bucharest. Very nice and popular town in the mountains. Plenty of accommodation there. Predeal (good for ski) and Bran (Dracula/Bran castle) are not very far, you can get the train, Predeal one stop from Sinaia, Bran with a taxi, you can combine it with visiting Rasnov fortress.
Or you can get off at Brasov, really nice city in the mountains, 2.5 h by train from Bucharest. You can visit the nearby Poiana Brasov, which is a very popular ski resort.
You will not have time to do all in a weekend, you either stick with Bucharest, or you can combine Brasov with Sinaia/Bran.

Never anything sensible during school holidays - but if someone can travel outside those dates then some serious deals to be had here. Thanks mate

Yes, very sad how prices go up during school holidays. I thought people at work don't do any research when going away with kids. While we were paying £500-700 for a week away, they were paying £3,000. Having kids now, I came across ridiculous prices during school holidays.
Saying this, we managed to book for May school holidays at La Sirene in France, £900 flights and accommodation for 2a +2c.
Sadly, our August holiday booked via The Sun fell apart after Greenbank Holidays managed to give us places not available...

Cheers for the suggestions, I'll look into them.

Another option would be Romania, but I don't know a lot about the country

You can ask me absolutely anything about it the only thing is I may be subjective. Wizzair, Blueair are flying there, as well Ryanair from Stansted. Depends where you want to go, is it city break, mountains, sea (sea only during the summer).

I fly with whoever is cheapest. This is a crackin deal. Doesn't mean everyone recommends them as a tip top airline. But they do the job.

So I fly whoever... as long as it is not Virgin. Personally can't give them £ since his actions against the NHS. But everyone's got their own line. But I'd not vote a Virgin deal cold cause of it.

As for Ryanair! Only issue I have is when I hadn't checked in on time and got charged to do it at customer services. But that was my own damn fault (left it til got to airport then had no signal!).

Don't see why people wouldn't. for what they do they are fantastic. Absolutely bargain flights to a wide range of destinations, no paying for frills no one needs, an impeccable safety record, and good punctuality.

Using the fare finder, thing is not working well on my phone, was totally infuriating. I raged quit. Ryanair awful company too, prefer Easyjet
Gdansk is lovely. Definitely worth a visit Heat for the price!

Also, Ryanair are fine - you get what you pay for. No-frills travel (and scratchcard salesmen!)

You are correct. London Stansted is in Essex and so is London Southend. London Luton is in Bedfordshire, whilst London Gatwick is in West Sussex.
