Return train trips across Scotland for £19.00 for aged 55+ from 1/10/14 to 30/11/14 (+return) @ ScotRail

ScotRail are repeating their Autumn Club 55 offer, albeit only from 1/10 to 30/11 in 2014 (ie September got missed out this year), and still includes Virgin & Cross Country & TransPennine services in Scotland but NOT East Coast ones. Note the RETURN portion can be in the one month after outward trip (ie by 29/12 if my +1 month maths are right)

Anyone aged 55 or over can buy a standard class return for just £19, with extra £2 saving for Senior/Disabled railcard holders.

It covers routes within Scotland as well as across the border to either Carlisle or Berwick-Upon-Tweed.

"Club 55 tickets are valid for travel on ScotRail, CrossCountry, TransPennine Express and Virgin trains services but NOT on East Coast, Caledonian Sleeper or private charter services."

The standard class Club55 tickets are available to buy up to the day of outward travel and are for a return trip up to a month ahead with a few restrictions on peak hours at major stations.

The £19/£17 tickets are NOT like standard Return tickets as they do NOT allow break of journey except for connections.

You will "soon" be able to buy online (offer starts 1/10/14) BUT the online system in previous offers has been for EITHER full £19/£35 fares OR for discounted £17/£33; it doesn't seem to permit booking for a 2+ people entitled to both fares.

There is a First Class offer too - at £35/£33 - but ONLY when pre-booked by 6pm before day of travel for specific trains out/back and for a few routes only (Aberdeen-Inverness to/fro Edinburgh/Glasgow) and avoiding peak times (ie similar to Advance tickets only valid on specific pre-reserved trips).

The website seems to have an error for standard £19 fares as it in one place it says "Reservations for both outward and return travel must be made at time of purchase." whereas all their other narrative/history says that actually ONLY applies to the First Class version.

Good to see them holding their Club 55 prices this year! With all outward travel must be completed between 1 October and 30 November 2014, and your ticket is valid for return travel up to one month from the date of outward travel.

Just re the point for the £19/£17 Standard class tickets where web page :
scotrail.co.uk/tic…-55
yet again says "Reservations for both outward and return travel must be made at time of purchase."
This was definitely NOT the case on previous Club 55 offers (though their website said it then too!). If you look further down the page it goes on to say in three ways that this isn't true, ie
"Do I need to book in advance? No, you do not need to book in advance.
"Is the ticket subject to availability? No, the ticket is not subject to availability.
"Do I need to make a reservation? Reservations for Club 55 are optional and can be made on request."

and once the online system is online should be able to validate this - ie it is NOT be like an Advance ticket which is ONLY valid on pre-booked trains, but like a RETURN ticket for older people, ie out on date of OUT ticket, back anytime during one month validity of RETURN ticket. (Though there are some peak morning/evening hour restrictions at major stations.)

You CAN make free seat reservations if you wish - ie to ensure a seat for your 55y/o+ body - but these are NOT required, and if you needed to travel on an earlier/later train that day you still could (or when returning within the 30 days validity).

Remember there is NO CLUB to join or Railcard to buy - just have to be able to prove you're aged 55 or older.

There is a similar offer already running across Wales (and bits beyond) from Arriva Trains Wales to 30/10- see my HUKD at
hotukdeals.com/dea…502

And there's also a Club55 offer if you want to travel 14/9 to 15/11 exclusively on TransPennineExpress - ie their network

Details of the Club55 offer (bit more complexity re Zones and EXCLUSIVELY on TPE unlike Wales/Scotland offers)

Is there anyone actually living in Scotland over the age of 55?

It applies to non-residents too - I've always been able to use without any difficulty

Will that still apply if Scotland decides to go it alone in a couple of weeks?

Friday 12 Sep and 2+ weeks until the ScotRail Club 55 offer starts but they've already activated their online purchase system via a page at
http://www.scotrail.co.uk/club-55/form

Unfortunately their implementation has, as in previous years, an early binary choice between buying EITHER all your tickets at full £19/£35 price OR ELSE buying all of them with Senior/Disabled Railcard £2 discount, so if travelling in a "mixed party" & plan to use the system to make seat reservations together you'd be out of luck - although you can of course buy tickets at stations where reservations can be made up to 6pm day prior to travel. [Remember with Club 55 First Class you HAVE to make reservations!]

Tips:

a. This is NOT expired - you can buy a Club55 ticket until 30/11 (and return within a month of that) - I did so just yesterday!.

b. If you are buying online a Club55 ticket as part of a group of people with different Railcards/ages and hence can't reserve seats together through the online system, you can ring Scotrail's online ticket service (choose the options as if you were buying a ticket) and explain you have a Club55 ticket & others booked but the separate Club55 system didn't allow you to make reservations for your party to sit together and they will make the reservation (free) for you. (Only downside is you have no physical evidence of your reservation just a reference reference number.)
