Great deal, id skip the tour and put your money to self drive if you wanna see the lights
Agreed! We hired a 4x4 from mycar.is/ and it was a great deal and (for us anyway) much better than sticking to a bus tour schedule

Good to know, thanks!
The Northern lights tour is about the going rate so I'd book with whoever I use for Golden Circle and South Coast tours both unmissable. If you don't see the lights they let you book again the following night for free.We we are going in January and were advised by the locals not to hire a car due the the long dark nights and unpredictable weather.
It may be possible to book this trip cheaper yourself as transfers are not included in the deal. These are £30 plus per person. Easyjet had flights for £34 from Luton the other day. Worth checking DIY cost for your dates. We are doing 3 nights and it's cost £210 for flights (WizzAir) and hotel. The flights include a checked in 10kg bag on the way out, using to take a few beers, etc. Prices really high in Iceland.Hotel booked on booking.com.

Went I Feb to heavy snow. I think a lot of the road(s) to the north were closed but the main road looping round the south coast was mostly fine (heated road?). That said, once I ventured off that main road I did skid off the road, got stuck in a river and ended up driving along a flood defence. Difficult driving when EVERYTHING was white, becomes disorientating.
Luckily you can hit most of the attractions (geysers, waterfalls, glaciers etc) without leaving the main road. Ace place.
Trouble with this is you get there late and leave early so you get 1 day there. Just checked flights from Gatwick for me

No the trip in January will be our first. I have done a lot of research since deciding to go. It will cost £300 to book the two main day trips, Northern lights trip and transfers for the two of us. Have a look on Reykjavik sight seeing website for trips and prices. Got some good info from Iceland forum on TA. You can have a walk around Reykjavik on Google Street View too.One good tip was to take a vacuum flask to use on trips. I'm taking a few packet soups too, seen a bowl of soup and a roll at one place £14.
We are doing Northern lights on first night, then if we miss them we'll have another chance the following night for free.

I don't think Wizz fly from Manchester. We are driving to Luton for our flights. Try looking on skyscanner.net You can do a search using UK as the airport and Reykjavik as destination. It will then come up with airports and airlines that have flights to Iceland.
