I would happily argue they are not as important - resturants, pubs, bars, retail shops do NOT need to be open if they so choose too, likewise they are also private businesses/public companies. NHS is not. Vital services have to work, considering 98%+ of all NHS costs are from taxation and NI I would say good move by Uber to relieve a cost that the NHS will not usually pick up, and thus those VITAL individuals who have to work do not have to pay the consequences of that (especially high taxi fares/no public transport etc).

What a stupid statement, for one, the others have a choice, they can request holiday for a start.

My GF is a nurse, they cant take any holiday surrounding Christmas, shes working Xmas eve night and boxing day night, without any say in it, she cant change those shifts and got lumped with them. not to mention they are 13 hour shifts, hardly the same thing as someone serving pints on Christmas morning for 3 hours.
Wouldn’t fancy getting into an Uber with a nurses uniform on

Why not? I'm quite a strapping lad...don't think the driver is going to do much even if I have my uniform on?

Disclaimer: not a nurse, but clearly making what might be a semi-justified comment but in a highly sexist way. Next time try something like "Keep safe people, and remember some of the horror stories regarding Uber drivers."

Ah nice! Shame I live miles from work and it would still cost a fortune!
My work pays for my taxi, so not voting either way. It’s a nice farewell gesture from Uber.

Well said. Exactly the point. I use to manager large Gastropubs, I would open on Christmas Day from 8am (we started at 7am) and closed at around 6pm. Difference is it was a business - we made a lot of Christmas Day, staff got paid double time, got a slap up meal after work, a lot of drink and transport provided to and from work!

Furthermore, my wife works for NHS in the community and she has to work Christmas Day for 8 hours with 1.5hrs commuting on top - oh, and we have a 5 year old so Christmas is kind of a big deal too. But similar to you say about your GF she didn't have a choice, not allowed to request holiday and someone has to look after people who need rehabilation post-operation and after returning home.

I am having a day off...thus why I am able to sit on here (clearly annoying you, or rather picking up sexist comments and calling them out for what they are).
I did say you comment, thus your intention was semi-justified, however it was the language and way you conveyed it.
So how about think about how you communicate next time.
EXZAMS managed to word it just fine.

Either way Merry Christmas.

An Uber driver murdered a British diplomat apparently. See news.

Wasn't that embassy/diplomat lady recently found to be murdered by an Uber driver?
Really gone of Uber. Was in Manchester waiting for a taxi when it was all surge pricing.Anyway ended up waiting for 45 minutes until it went normal pricing and was assigned a driver. Waited 15 minutes for him, tracking him all the way.. for him to just cancel! Couldn't get one after that.
Literally wasted an hour for nothing.

Same happened the other day.

Seems they only pick up surge priced jobs and any normal priced ones as and when it suits

USELESS
Uber badly need some good publicity but I can't fault this, so heat added.

I, for one, am grateful to the medical and emergency staff who have to be on duty regardless and support anything that helps them..... just a thought, but, perhaps we should pay them properly in the first place?

I don't agree with the other person but you clearly have never worked in hospitality. You can't booked any holidays off in December or early January. I worked 70 hours last week & will be working 60+ hours this week. The manager does around 80+ a week. The only day I'll get off is Xmas day. I'll be working all day till late on Xmas eve. Back in on boxing day & working new years eve & new years day. I have no choice unless I quit.

A nurses job is way more important & they deserve extra things like this but that doesn't make their job harder than someone else's. Also its much more than just serving pints
I can only imagine the price Ubers will be charging over that period.
Although it's better than no offer from them , it will hardly be a drop in the ocean when it comes to the final cost to get home 🙈
People need to stop bad mouthing Uber on a general level. They've been nothing but gentleman everytime for me and my friends overall. They are doing a service here for NHS staff.

Government won't even give nurses a penny increase in wage, and some fools here are still Criticising Uber? Smh

Stop your car £10 away and call Uber.
Should be free really
I'd ask the nurses if this is the kind of organisation they'd want to support. How would they feel if they were forced into being self-employed and giving up holiday pay, maternity leave etc just to earn what is often below minimum wage.

And you'd have to be a fool to think that Uber are doing this out of the goodness of their heart. They're a very aggressively minded corporation, it's nothing but a cynical ploy to increase their profits in the medium to long term. And the growth of companies like Uber is not good news for anyone who relies on hard fought workers rights.

Problem with that argument is that, in theory, the pubs/bars are contributing towards the difficulties that nurses/doctors face around this time of year.
NHS as an institution is really terrible. Only way to see a proper doctor is to go to emergency and wait 4 hours. You will get better attention in second/third world country. Not fault of NHS staff though.

When I worked at Wetherspoons they said you have to work on either holiday (Christmas or New Years). You couldn't request both off.

Either way though I do agree that NHS staff are more important as they provide a service you literally cannot live without. So I also would prioritise them above myself.

My family and I used Uber service in London recently and they were all fantastic. We had no complaints. Fast & efficient.

Not yet...
Their fares will be surging those days so a normal £10 fare will be £40 at least but suppose only £30 with the £10 off.

True but people don't know when enough is enough & most staff will still serve a very drunk person when they shouldn't. It will be my last Xmas doing it. I have more important things to be doing during the holidays like spending time with family than serving people drink & food
EXZAMS41 m ago

and the list goes on

"The figure represents more than a fifth of all claims against taxi and car-hire drivers filed to 14 UK police forces last year, which totalled at 154 allegations including attacks in minicabs and chauffeur vehicles."

...so you're less safe getting a taxi than an Uber?

I would agree with oddball80 to some extent. I personally would have worded it a bit better, by stating police, fire services, airline workers, security services etc.. many of which do not get double pay etc... It's not all about NHS staff. I've worked in the NHS, and know full well they are not as hard done by as would like you to believe, and they all have the choice of leaving and going private, including the nurses. Also remember there are a lot contract nurses, doctors, staff etc who have NHS email addresses, and get paid a significant amount!!
I don't see why people are hating on this or complaining.
It's simply giving up to £20 off for NHS staff. £20 for literally nothing, is that a good deal? Yes it is of course, so it gets voted hot.
Whether or not your work pays for your taxis or not is irrelevant, it doesn't somehow make this free £20 voucher for people that do have to pay for their taxis not a good deal.
What more is there to it?...
