Thanks.

Had one as a end to end tester, broke very quickly, should do well as a diy tester, just don't expect it to last for over a year or two.

Ordered.:)

Top review on Amazon - seems pretty comprehensive:

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple, effective cable tester looks for continuity … 4.0 out of 5 stars Simple, effective cable tester looks for continuity and shorts.By R. F. Stevens HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on 29 Oct. 2011Verified PurchaseThis is a very basic tester, arranged in two parts, one for each end of the cable. The 'Master' contains the battery and test sequencer as well as the indicator lights, the 'Remote' just a set of indicator lights. There are two types of socket on each part; 8pin for RJ45 and 6 pin for RJ11. If there is an open circuit on one wire in the cable then the pair of lights corresponding to the wire ends will not light.. If there is a short then the relevant lights for the ends at the Remote unit will not light.. If there is an difference in the wiring between ends of the cable, eg a reversed pair, then the relevant lights at each end will show the actual connections. It has two stepping rates for the test sequence; ON, about 5 steps per second, and S, about 1 step per second. It does NOT do a high frequency test to check on characteristic impedance, or crosstalk, or for wires scrambled across the pair sequence. The required 9V PP3 battery is NOT included in the pack.My unit is Black plastic with an Orange label, ie colours are not as shown in the illustration. This is a generic unit sold under many guises by many vendors for a wide range of prices.WARNING.DO NOT CONNECT THIS TESTER TO A LIVE DATA CIRCUIT!Addendum. 17th June 2013.I recently upgraded my home network to Gigabit 1000Mb/s, and discovered that one of the installed outlets refused to go faster than 100Mb/s.The tester showed that one wire of the eight in the CAT5E cable was no longer connected to the back of the wall socket, so the Gigabit had defaulted to the slower standard which only used two pairs instead of all four. The quick diagnosis allowed a quick fix.

We've been using this at work place for years. Never let us down. Reliable product and well worth £2

So can you this to trace ports from wall to patch panel?

It's for testing cables (making sure that every pin is connected). I guess you could use it to figure out what goes where, but you'd need to connect it to each port one by one which would be a pretty damn tedious way of doing it!
If you want to properly trace cables you'll need to be prepared to pay a bit more than £2 I'm afraid!

Thanks.Nice addition to the toolbox.

You'd do better with a tone tester, Fluke do the best but something like this should do the job amazon.co.uk/dp/…c=1

Good price, worth a punt at £2, hot from me

Perfectly functional providing you are aware of its intended use and limitations. nice price.

Yeah we used to use these all the time for tracing cables as well as testing each internal wire however as someone said, a tone tester or similar is better as you can send a pulse down one end and go to what you suspect to be the other end and see if it's flashing

Ordered thks with crimper, left all mine at work when I retired.

I have one of these, very useful

I have one. Bought it years ago, for about £9. Really useful. Sure - a bit cheap and tacky, but works fine. Recommended.

Great price for a very useful device. Works fine if you're testing cables at home. Not very reliable on longer cables (100m+) though.

I have one (or at least something similar), it's ok for casual testing straight through cables but for crossover I'd suggest getting something else as it can be annoying due to the LEDs being quite fast (at least for me).

Cat 5 isn't supposed to work over a 100m.

Thanks, handy stocking filler.

Been using one of these for work for years now, simple tool for cable continuity testing. It's surprising how often network faults are caused by faulty patch cables.

OOS / Listing ended on eBay, still available via Amazon for £2.25. Expire deal ?

oos both Amazon and eBay

They are only worth about £2, if you get one that even lasts long enough for the battery to run out, you've done well.

I did a huge cabling install last year and went through 3 of these on that one job alone. They are flimsy and break very easily, but they are cheap enough that I don't give a ****. I always carry a spare brand new one whenever I work!

thanks, just ordered from Amazon. 20sep onward delivery.

Currently unavailable.

I've had two of these and there OK for light use but don't travel well in a tool kit. Ended up buying a more expensive type as the pins inside bent.

My unit arrived today.

Even before i unsealed the plastic it came in ( which looked liked it have been resealed by one of those jml home plastic bag resealers), i could see dirt on the unit in multiple places.

Clearly not prisitne/factory fresh.

Did anybody else feel the unit they recieved was not factory fresh/sealed?

Really hate recieving previously unwanted returns or refurb units, advertised as new.
