Specification Mono or Stereo Output: Mono

doesnt really matter on small radios unless u r connecting to full size system

I think it does especially with FM. But that's IMO

Anyone know if this radio has the old style power button that locks in position when pressed or the electronic switch that you simply click on/off?

Thanks

If you connect to headphones or a larger system through the headphone socket it will output in Stereo. The radio is mono because the unit itself only has one speaker.

If you buy from the same seller but through ebay it is £10 cheaper as P+P is free there, which makes this hot price hotter, I'm very tempted.

Thanks for this - just bought from this seller on ebay £49.99 post free

I paid £100-00 for this radio a few years ago & it's a great radio. Being able to record onto FM (as well as DAB) is very useful. I also use it to watch football on foreign channels whilst listening to a UK radio commentary, using the pause facility you can sync the two together.

Based on a sample of one (so probably not representative?) I'd be reluctant to spend this much on a Roberts branded radio again. The one I have (Gemini 59) developed a fault with the on/off press button early in its life and is a real pain to turn on or off now. It also eats batteries (like all DAB radios).

£60 for a mono radio....when did tech go backwards while increasing prices ?

More good than bad reviews on Amazon.

I can imagine it would be useful. Normally, one would record from FM (or DAB), but to record onto such modulation and transmission schemes seems worth the excessively high price for a radio.

For those people who are complaining about this only being Mono, do you realise that stereo speakers are only effective when you place yourself between the two speakers? With a portable radio, this means that you need to be very close, facing the radio....and don't move!

Makes so much more sense to have just one larger speaker than two smaller ones. (better lower frequency response).

I've read reviews complaining that you cannot delete recordings. Have you run into this issue? Can you simply format the SD card?

Thanks.

FM in stereo sounds a lot better than mono FM where ever you are in relation to the source IMO

Wrong, on so many levels !

I've worked in recording studios for years, I know a fair bit about drivers (speakers) and frequency response. Would you care to enlighten me?

Stereo gives a far better depth perception for music reproduction and is more akin to hearing 'naturally' as it duplicates the humans natural hearing response, however mono is preferred for talk based programming. Thanks for your history lesson, but line up 100 people in a room being fed by a stereo rather than a mono speaker, output some music and see what the 'better' perception of sound quality results in.

I'm not sure you're quite hearing me. What you're saying is correct, only if the listener is positioned between the two speakers. (as per my original post #12).

I have a stereo radio in my workshop; I am nearly always to one side of it. To my ears it sounds better in stereo than mono.

Agreed completely.
I would prefer a bigger mono speaker than 2 small stereo speakers

Really wish I had the time to even think about recording radio on an sd card. Do people actually do this?

I have never tried deleting on the radio. I put the SD card in the computer & transfer the recording then delete the card using the computer.

All deliveries are free from electrical123.com and, as far as I can see, are next day. When ordering, I was asked for a delivery date, chose next day and got it next day, with a text in the morning to say that it would be delivered between 1137 and 1237 and it was.
I bought it for the record function, and have tried a couple tonight. Easy to set up and the repeat record is easy too. It's far from the best radio in the world, but it is also very far from the worst. It's not great on speech radio, but it's acceptable, and at the price it's amazing. I'd have been disappointed if I'd paid £100 for it, but at £50 delivered, I'm delighted.

It's actually only £50 as delivery is free. Tech[nology] hasn't gone backwards. This is a DAB radio - a new technology introduced in about 1995. It also records onto SD card, and this isn't a feature that is generally available.

Aye, people do this. It's easy to do. I have set the timer to record Radio 4 from 6.30pm to 7.00pm every night (comedy half hour) and will replay these programmes either in the car when driving or at leisure at the weekend. It took 1.5 minutes to set the recording up (possibly less time than it took you to even think about posting a message about not having time to even think about recording to an SD card :p). I recommend it.

You CAN now delete recordings using the radio set. The instruction booklet contains an addendum insert explaining that this feature has been enabled in the firmware.

It's an electronic switch. The radio starts to play when the recording starts, but you can mute the volume so that it doesn't disturb you, and this won't affect the recording.

It's the same price on electrical123 site. They don't charge for delivery Mon-Fri, and seem to offer next day delivery on their own site, but are less specific on ebay.

Go on treat yourself - I got mine today and can recommend it.

Yes, I just thought about it. Didn’t take me much time to think about. Took me less than seven seconds to think about, which means that it easily fit between that which I usually think about.
