We've got a few of these around the house (bought when they were about £60 each on Amazon a while ago). They're fantastic - really nice sound quality and seem very well made.

The Undok app is a little clunky to use, but once it's all set up it's very easy to just choose your speaker directly from Spotify.

These were £280 when they were released a few years ago, and the quality of them is reflected in that original price (pocket-lint.com/spe…nos).

Absolute bargain at £40.
Bought from here at £50 about 6 months ago.

Good sound.

The description implies that this has DAB- it does not
Edited by: "wpj" 4th Jul
The info above says it also has DAB and DAB+ as well as FM. However my understanding is it's just a streaming device. Is that correct? It also has a LAN CAT5 cable connection - does it offer WiFi as well and is it via the App?

wpj just beat me to the DAB with the answer to my question.

It has both WiFi and LAN connections.

The WiFi for the streaming device and the speaker have to be on the same network, which caused a few problems for us with phones switching networks so we attached via a powerline adapter and it works perfectly now. Only problem is that if a different phone connects (usually for Radio 4) then it has to be reset via the mode button.

Good sound.
It has bluetooth connection (blue light), Spotify connect (green light), Internet radio via Undok (Pinkish- those others can also be controlled via Undok app). Forgotten what the white light is for- possibly just powering up.
If you have 2, it can be set up as stereo
Don’t need. Don’t need. Don’t need. Don’t need...
Will this link up with an R1 for stereo?

It will depend on if the R1 has a left/right switch on the back. If so, yes.

Just bought 2 more- no idea why....

I would be careful with those 2 "new sellers" as they still have "Velocity outlet" in their blurb......
I went from being vaguely curious to thinking about buying one for my Mother after she was using my bluetooth speaker and mentioned she might get rid of the cd player in the kitchen for something like that (mainly for listening to Spotify).

How are they powered, are they rechargeable or do they run off the mains?

The reviews seem pretty good with the exception of music quality, but she's no audiophile so as long as it doesn't sound dreadful, I think we may be onto a winner.

For current owners, how do you find the sound quality kicked out by these?
Anyone have any experience of connecting the S2 speaker via the 3.5mm jack to an Amazon echo and using it to play Spotify / Amazon music etc? I guess it could be Bluetooth connected to the echo but with Bluetooth I believe you loose the multi room function of the Amazon echo, which is a feature I’d like to continue to use.

I use the Gear4 Stream speakers. They're not too bad, appear on Spotify Connect, Wifi (no LAN), Bluetooth and Line In, currently on Amazon they're priced really well at the moment. They have the Stream 1 which is battery powered ( but can also be powered from MicroUSB) as Used -Like New being sold for £10.97 amazon.co.uk/gp/…all

There's a bigger Stream 3 which puts out more volume, but is mains powered only and that's currently £19.95 New, Fulfilled by Amazon.
Here's a review for the Stream 1, but remember it was being reviewed when it was selling for £100 trustedreviews.com/rev…m-1

That looks like a very good call. I actually have some credit to use with Amazon so I'd prefer to buy from them. I guess I could try the 1 and then, if I'm happy enough with it I could get the 3 for a little extra "oomf"! The Stream 1 I can see is used - is that right?

Do you have more than one of these - I was wondering how well they marry up if using a couple? The Roberts units look like a serious bit of kit and when you can get them super cheap, it could be a difficult choice between the two.

The 1 are Used (but description says they're refurbished, comes in original packaging).

I've got 2 of each. Personally really like the Stream 1, sound is loud enough for the OH to moan at me for how loud it is when I'm taking a shower. Also love the battery, as I can take it to the bathroom or out in the garden.

Multiroom is pretty good too, just create the grouping you want then when choosing you're speaker on Spotify you just choose the one that is the top of the group. You can also create a stereo pair in the group part of the app too.

The buttons numbered 1-3 on the speaker let you save presets too, so start your fave album or playlist, then hold the number down and it'll be set to that, so next time you want to hear it you don't even have to go into Spotify on your phone, just press the button and it starts streaming.

WiFi, use Spotify App and it shows in Devices available. Spotify Connect is just the name for their feature that lets you switch the music you're listening to from your phone to your stereo, soundbar, computer, smart speaker etc without interrupting playback and not having to keep Spotify open on your phone for it to work.

Thanks a lot for the info - the Stream 1 is here and I'm really impressed. The only way you could tell it wasnt brand new was the dust and lint on the rubber base! I guess the battery life might be the only minor gripe with it being a used model, but for that price!!

It's not the prettiest but the sound is decent and it's suitabltyportable. It was super easy to set up through the wifi and the app even updated the firmware on the device.

I bought the 3 and that should be with me mid week. I'll compare the 2 and see what I think, I might even keep both!

Glad you're happy with it. I was happy with mine when I paid closer to £30-40 for them, so at the current prices I've considered more (even though I don't really need them). Battery shouldn't be too much of a worry, had mine for over 2 years now and still easily get 3 hours from it (it's meant to be 8 hours, and it'd probably get close to that but I've never had the need for it to be on battery for longer than 3 hours).

There's another app than the Gear4 one which has more sources of music to choose from it's called WiFi DJ play.google.com/sto…bre or apps.apple.com/us/…036
It was also updated more recently than the Gear4 one, it's published by Ten-Tronics., Ltd who I guess were the ODM/OEM who made the Gear4 Black products for Gear4 Music.

Cheers, I'll have a look at that. Do you run the 1 purely on battery or also when it's plugged in? I know that's a question that my mum will ask me!

I'm thinking about the 3 to be wired into the kitchen and have the 1 in the living room and for outside if she's moving around.

Whichever charger is nearest which would usually be a 2A. The one that's plugged in is using a 1.5A Sony charger from an old phone. As long as it's 5V which it would be with USB, the Speaker will draw what it needs.

I figured 1A would pump out enough to have it keep running if I decided to keep it plugged into the mains.

Next job is to try and get my Mother using Google Assistant on her phone to see if it's worth getting a Google Home Mini!
