I have the same question

I would go for Roku as they are independent & in my opinion their UI is just the best - simple and intuitive. You're not tied to Amazon ecosystem with Roku and they're not blocking you from using the box in any way you want. Their store has variety of channels and providers to choose from including British catch-up & big OTT providers like Netflix, Prime etc. Obviously you need to pay a little more for "independence" from Amazon - I believe their 4K box is cheaper at the moment.

I have a Shield downstairs for a 4K HDR TV and a Roku Express upstairs for a 1080p Tv. Thinking of getting one of these for upstairs as the Express forces my Plex server to transcode 4K content to 1080p. As I understand it The Roku Streaming Stick + will request 4K content from the Plex server without transcoding and then downsample to 1080p itself. Is this right? Cheers. I’d get another Shield but this is a great deal and I love the simplicity of Roku devices.

Yes that is correct, it will direct play all formats of 4k and HDR also.
For a moment I thought this didn't have the additional wireless receiver but checking under Box contents in the blurb it appears that it does.

I thought this deal would be a lot warmer.

Anyone know when the next model will be announced? Been trying to hold off but think I might just bite the bullet on this one as my smart TV features have just become terrible years later.
This or a firestick 4k?
Bizarre really. One of the quirks of HDUK. If I'd posted a deal for a packet of Mars bars for a quid it'd reach 4000 degrees.

All this is correct. I have an old Roku 2 that's been giving great service for years now. Well worth the extra investment to be independent from Amazon who, in my view, smell. Jeff Bezos is not your friend. Roku are not the most ethical company either but none of the tech firms are and Amazon is possibly the worst.

Additionally to the info above, if you have a laptop/PC you can easily stream all your media to the Roku via the free version of Plex.
