Roku 3 - £29.97 - PC World/Currys - instore ONLY

Saw this in PC World/Currys Farnborough.

Unfortunately didn't have time to enquire about stock (I already have one so the urge to splash cash was held back).

Thought this might be useful for those who prefer to connect streamers via ethernet as increasingly streamers are moving to wifi only.

Release the geese etc etc

They are also doing the roku express which has amazon on it as well as all the others you mentioned
If I hadn't stopped shopping at Currys*, I would be all over this.
I have a Roku 2 and could do with another but the express has no network socket.

*Their parking company tried (and failed) to charge me £125 for parking while in store and Currys would not help.

Wow that's crap but typical as they seem to sub out the carparks to private companies and I guess they get a kickback or something. A good reason to boycott them, along with their often terrible customer service
Best box out there - does everything.

Can it play x265 files without using Plex?

I'm not sure. I use plex on a roku 3 and firetv stick 1 & 2 with my pc doing the transcoding and other than the occasional issue with subtitles (which I was always able to solve) I have had no issues

I think the guy you quoted was referring to how it is the streaming player with the least bloat and adverts which is refreshing after using fire tv
They have had the clearance price labels up for over a month. But no actual stock in all the stores I checked.

I have got a Roku 3 with Plex but my PC struggles to encode and I get glitching/freezing. It is my PC at fault as it is old. Was wondering if there was a way round this problem.

Don't really want a firestick - was hoping there would be a work around with the Roku. but thanks for the heads up.

Transcoding h265 needs your PC to have some grunt - anything less than a Core i5 will probably struggle. Fire TV 4K will play h265 natively as will nvidia shield.

But the Roku 3 has the best Plex client I've come across - stick with h264 and you'll be fine

Ahh I'm not sure about that.

I do videi editing and stock trading so I built my pc. It has an i7 cpu and 16gb of ram so I never experienced any problems.

I think there are tutorials on YouTube for optimising encoding for older machines

You seem to make that comment a lot, yet less than a third of sets sold so far this year are 4k (nearer a quarter I believe). Find me a 4k product that compares to this and I'd be interested, but the same old nonsense trotted out time and again without ever offering a viable alternative is getting rather boring.
None left in my local shop. They're making way for the new sticks but they are all wifi only and I need Ethernet. Don't care about 4K because I haven't got a 4K telly, any 4K videos and my eyesight is crap anyway sound can't see the difference
