The 4k firestick probably has more firepower, can obviously do 4k and install any Android application such as Kodi, it's only £5 more

They both have their pros and cons.

The firestick can sideload apps which is great if you use Kodi etc but it lacks apps such as NOWTV.

The Roku is an all around great player supporting every app, Amazon, Netflix, NOWTV etc but you cannot sideload anything onto it and the UI of some of the apps is really outdated. One of the Roku's best features is private listening mode and it's worth buying for that alone. Basically you install the Roku app on your phone and plug your headphones in. Now you can watch stuff from your TV and the audio plays through your phone/headphones.

Interesting. Is there an option in the FireSticks settings menu for this?

Yes. In settings/bluetooth/audio I think. But I've replaced my fire tv stick ( probably a V1 ) with one of these. The interface is more basic but more responsive.
You can apparently side load Kodi on one of these too.

kodiroku.com/

Not as flexible as a typical Android TV box but you are also unlikely to be able to run Netflix in HD on them either, so it's swings and roundabouts.

I'll second that. You use an app on your phone to play the sound privately. Due to some crafty time shifting of the video stream there's zero lip sync issues. No glitches, as good as top end Bluetooth.
Android app developer here. I have a roku express and love it. I even made my own app for it which was pretty easy to do compared to writing android apps. From what I've heard firesticks eventually get really slow and force a lot of amazon content on you. Sideloading apps on any Android device is a major security risk and is bad practice. Who knows what extra 'gifts' have been put in the apk package? Android boxes are ok, but really it's an OS that isn't designed for TVs. Android on TV was an afterthough. I guess everyone has different tastes though. On another note, this came at £24.99 for me , not £19.99. Is the deal over?
