Another chance to save a fiver off the cost of this entry-level streaming device from Roku which gets you access to over 6,700+ Roku channels (apps) of streaming content... including all of the main UK CatchUp TV services (BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, My5, UKTV Play, etc.) as well as having apps for Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and NOW TV all through the one device. Add to that 'TVPlayer' for live streaming most (but, sadly, not all) of the 'Freeview' style broadcast channels, with the likelihood of a 'BT Sport' app only months away, plus forthcoming apps for the new 'Disney Plus' and 'Apple TV Plus' streaming services once they launch in the UK and you have a pretty well-rounded offering for streaming just about anything you could want.

Can this be used to watch live channels of freeview through broadband without needing to connect an antenna?

You can access TV Player with it. Shows BBC channels, C4, C5 and some of the Freeview lineup but ITV channels are now in their premium option.

Take a look at their website and decide if it's for you. Also offer a trial of the premium service, though the channels they offer on premium are better through NowTV for same monthly fee but less adverts.

Yep, we're doing exactly the same, after the subscription exceeded £100 a month we said it was enough. The broadband went to plusnet, we got one of these loaded up with appropriate apps, and then bought a short NowTV thing because we miscounted the number of days left and we want to watch the last couple Game of Thrones...

Honestly. Apart from the odd advert on ITV as kids watching BGT I honestly don't know what I was paying for.

They don't produce enough content to make it worthwhile for me. It took me leaving to realise that I was paying for Sky but not watching their channels.

Their packs need to align with their competition and it doesn't. Huge amount to pay each month for a machine to record TV for me.

You can watch live streams for all of the ITV channels using the 'ITV Hub' app on Roku in the UK... so no need to pay for the premium 'TVPlayer Plus' package to get those. Likewise, all of the BBC channels can be live-streamed using the 'BBC iPlayer' Roku channel (app) and IIRC they are going to be bringing live streams to the 'UKTV Play' app on Roku (it's already possible to live stream via the 'UKTV PLay' website) plus there are plenty more free live streaming options, depending on what you wish to watch. There's a free "private" Roku channel [ACCESS CODE: arteseafon] which goes by the name of 'FilmOn - Unofficial' that has most (though not all) of the main freeview/over-the-air (OTA) type channels and is worth adding. You install it via your online Roku account, using the 'Add channel with code' option listed on the main page (after you sign-in) and just type in the access code (shown above) to add it to the selection of channels on your Roku device. It's one I use quite a bit, myself, because I like that it has a built-in Now/Next Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) so that you can easily see what is being broadcast at any given time. The picture quality is not as good as some other apps... but it's more than passable, costs nothing, and doesn't require you to sign-in to use it. The main omissions, based on my own personal preferences are 'FreeSport' (which used to be on 'TVPlayer' until around March this year) and 'Talking Pictures TV' who, as a small family-run channel, have yet to expand into online streaming.

Hope that is of some use!

You could always make the purchase online and use their free "Click+Collect" service to have it delivered (for next day collection) at a store of your choosing. They also offer a 1-month free trial of their 'Delivery Saver' service so, if you wanted to, you could have it delivered to your home and then cancel before the 1-month trial is over to avoid future payments!
Thanks @IoW_Skin

Greatful for any help with these devices after being spoiled by sky thinking for me with series links and planners for 10+ years.

You might find that there are some "in stock" at your local 'Tesco' supermarket but, if not, there is the option to make the purchase online and have it sent to your nearest 'Tesco' for collection the next day.
A question if I may please, will this show sky Atlantic. History channel, sky1?

You're welcome!

Another useful tip, if you'd rather not have your payment information "on file" with Roku when you register for your Roku account is to use the alternative webpage [my.roku.com/signup/nocc] instead of the usual [my.roku.com/signup] address or the short-link URL provided in the Quick Start Guide (QSG) and on-screen when first setting-up your Roku device.

As for the series links... if you plan on subscribing to 'NOW TV' for access to Sky channels, you can always add shows (and films) to your 'Watchlist' within the 'NOW TV' app to keep track of things - there's also a 'Continue Watching' feature that can come in handy - but, generally speaking, there is no real need for a 'Planner' like you have with Sky because pretty much everything worth watching is made available "On Demand" anyway. As an ex-Sky customer myself, I found it fairly easy to let go of them and we've now saved hundreds (if not thousands) of pounds by streaming everything.

You can also type-in the name of a TV show or movie and have the Roku "Follow" it... which not only works for getting notified about new stuff (as soon as it becomes available on Roku) but also for getting notified about price-drops and/or if something goes from being Pay-Per-View (PPV) to, say, free with a subscription to Netflix, NOW TV, or Prime Video, etc. The Roku 'Search' feature is also useful for finding which channels have a particular title and at what cost - no point paying to stream it on one app when it's free on another, right!?!

Hopefully that will help you get started... but feel free to message me if you have any further questions

You can get 'Sky Atlantic' and 'Sky One' with a NOW TV Entertainment pass and then watch via the 'NOW TV' Roku channel (app) for UK Roku devices. There's various ways to access content from the 'History' channel... including via the 'TVPlayer' app for UK Roku devices, as well as the new 'History Play' subscription service (£3.99 per month, after 7-day free trial period) through Amazon Prime Video Channels - although you also need to be an Amazon Prime member to get that.

There is not much that you cannot watch on Roku, through one (or more) of the 6,700+ apps available!

Thank you.
I am missing the ability to pause live TV though. With the exception of the iPlayer I haven't found a way to do it yet. Though I suppose that's down to advertising and app funding.
