Thank you, seems like it may be worth waiting for the other one to come down to £30 again just for the dual band wifi alone!

What is the difference between this and the other 4K roku stick?

I have two of the Roku stick +, one stuck in the back of my TV permanently and the other is for traveling with. I paid full price for both, and don't regret it.

I returned mine, it overheated playing standard HD (not 4k) youtube, and when I looked into it it seemed to be a common problem, Roku even have a page for it. To be fair my daughter does have it on in the background for hours on end, but even so.

I just upgraded my Chromecast in the end, which has never had a problem

Also note that the free movies are HD, not 4k (I know it does say that but the Ratuken interface is a bit naff and it's not that obvious)

I have the basic HD one and bought the dual-band 4k one @ £30 on Black Friday (arrives Friday).
The basic one is great, apart from wifi-issues. Works great with Plex and Prime.
Never had overheating issues.

The Streaming Stick + supports adaptive frame rate, which I like for my movies, I am also hoping it plays local content at full bandwidth given the improved wifi.
Can anyone confirm if YouTube Kids can be installed/side loaded onto this?

Do you know if this (24p) works with Netflix? The app on my Sony TV doesn’t for some reason.

Roku Streaming stick+ 4K used to be the same price in last November.

I don't yet know. I know that it works at 24p on local content and 25p on YouTube content.
It is supposed to work with Prime and Netflix. I have heard that Prime works, but folk complained about Netflix when launched over a year ago. No idea if now fixed.
I've got the roku stick 4k+ which is now £45 there and it does all of our TV needs. Incredible device. Turns the TV on off, does volume, has every app you can think of and is very fast - two years later it's as good as day 1 with all new app updates. I honestly think the premiere + is worth the extra £15. Better Wi-Fi reception and performance. Either way can't go wrong with Roku really. Mum in law is using my old Roku 3 since we upgraded to the 4K one and she's very happy as well

I also have chromecast ULTRA but it serves very different needs I think. It's easier to turn stuff on with a remote

Won't someone think of the children!
Don't bother with the rakuten offer. They have 'limited' vouchers that get used up quite quickly. I've been bitten by this one before.

Rakuten are pretty poor in helping their customers with these situations.

It's Roku that send the vouchers. I had one sent to one account the other account didn't receive the vouchers. 2 minute chat got it sorted.

Cheers.

I got the vouchers, just wouldn't apply to Rakuten, because they'd allocated the 8093 vouchers they had commited to.

Does anyone know if the 3 free HD movies from Rakuten TV are still available (or has the offer run out)? Thanks very much!

Sorry if I've misunderstood your post - do you mean you received 3 Rakuten codes but they wouldn't actually work on the Rakuten website? Thanks!

Yes, that's it.

There are a limit that can be redeemed as far as I know.

It only supports HDR10. It does NOT do HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Hybrid Log Gamma (BBCs format choice), Dolby Atmos.

According some critics it's 4k image quality is aweful. The 4k Firestick is a better choice because it literally has all the features this is missing and doesn't look like garbage.

I don't have one myself, im just parroting things i've read about this. Worth keeping in mind if any of this matters to you!

What Hifi also has reviewed HDMI cables, in which they talk about differences in picture and sound quality - when the digital signal will be identical. So when they give the Roku a 'Picture' score of 2, I have a few reservations....

whathifi.com/ama…iew

However, further watching showed contrast up, and tones as vivid and day-glo, plus there were issues with motion handling and noise. The sound, too, was hard and thin with a lack of dynamics, punch or subtlety.

What Hi-Fi really aren't anything to go by at all anymore, in the AV industry they are an actual joke now. Honestly don't ever go by them if you can find an alternative review.
I didn't realise this was still live, I left one with my mother at Christmas, much easier to have it all in one place. I just ordered another to replace it.

I actually find the firestick range slightly overrated in truth. They don't have the range of official apps the Roku's, Chromecast or Apple Tv's have. So whilst the kodi brigade go on about the firestick to death, the truth is the firestick leaves you very little choice but to go down that route to start with.
Can you sideload apps onto this?
No ethernet?
Istanbul_Kop31/12/2019 15:16

No ethernet?

None of the UK Roku range has ethernet now. It's possible to pay extra and get an ethernet adaptor for the firestick range, but again they don't come as standard anymore either. (Mainly because modern WiFi is faster and longer range than even up to a couple of years ago so for most it's not needed so much.)

That's a shame, for me...I use PLEX mostly, wi-fi isn't enough for 4K HDR with Atmos sound. It's enough for Netflix and the like, but I need a wired connection for PLEX. I have an Nvidia Shield, but it has the annoying 4k judder bug that people keep complaining about. It was fixed in a previous update, then unfixed in the last update. So I've been thinking of other options. A shame, as the Shied really is the best thing really.

Yep. Had the both the older generations of the Shield, and for 4K HDR with lossless then that's the only real choice right now. Only other option I can think of is the Vero 4K I'd imagine. If it wasn't for needing LOSSLESS Atmos then the Apple tv 4K with the enhanced video player is the closest match otherwise. Have tried the new Nvidia Shield and it's a good box, but it's actually quite annoying too in its own way. For one thing global voice search doesn't work well with Plex at the minute, where as I used to be able to say a title from the home screen and it bring up the movie info, then click to go to its page in Plex, all it does right now is load up the Plex homescreen. The 4K AI upscaling is nice too, but not as big a deal as is being made out online.
