Just as much protection painting water onto your wood, water is cheaper.

Anything oil based, it should last 5-10 years , just watch oil based wood paint.

Anything that has a wax in it. Toolstation sell but not many colours to chose from.

Cresote is unavailable thanks to the whizz dome of the EU, creocote would be the next best thing....
