The return of the best-selling interactive mystery visual novel! Follow in the footsteps of Aya Fumino, a school penfriend allegedly involved in a tragic murder 15 years ago. Explore the prefecture of Shimane, uncover clues, and use the letters you wrote to each other to track down her childhood friends for questioning. But perhaps these friends, now adults living a peaceful life, will not be eager to let their painful memories resurface…

Game Features

  • Solve a 15 year-old mystery - Many years have passed since the last correspondence with your pen friend Aya Fumino. While those memories have been long left behind, a confession of murder revealed in her last letter has resurfaced. It is now up to you to uncover the truth behind her disappearance.
  • An interactive visual novel - Navigate your way around Aya’s hometown, search for clues in the environment, and confront her former friends that have now reached adulthood. Use the items and evidence at your disposal to make them confess!
  • A new way to enjoy the story - Turn on the live-action mode from the title screen at any time while playing to see Shimane's locations and residents come to life.
  • The complete experience - In addition to several gameplay improvements, Root Letter: Last Answer adds brand new epilogues that conclude Aya Fumino’s story.
  • A story with different outcomes - Your replies to Aya’s letters will have lasting consequences, and impact your relationship. Choose your answers carefully and shape a story with up to five different endings.

This game bombed big time. Last summer it was great for buying brand new and taking into CEX for more money.
Can anyone who's played this advise whether its any good and worth your time?

I heard its awful, MetaCritic gives it average reviews.
From watching gameplay, its a bit on the creepy watching school girls side of the ball park.

I played the original expecting a phoenix wright level story while investigating the village. Tbh the storys not that interesting and the investigations you do are kind of frustrating because its quite unclear at times what evidence you are supposed to be presenting at times. Also what the story leads up to is very weird and the ending requirements are a bit all over the place. I am not sure what enhancements this new version has but if the story’s the same i wouldn’t expect too much if an improvement. Basically there are significantly better visual novel games out there imo.

I liked it and at this price, it's an absolute bargain.

It has its own story telling style, very much Japanese. Basically if you like VN's and the Japanese culture, you will enjoy this game.

I can see why it can be a bit marmite with some people but it's text heavy which is exactly what it should be.

In this version you get a live action mode with real actors and locations (big plus for my love of Japan and Shiname).
It has multiple endings and some other quality of life updates that makes replays much more streamlined.

Its an easy plat too.

And no there's nothing weird schoolgirl stuff in it at all so ignore the above comment. Very likely confusing it with another game.

Looking forward to the next game in the series.
