Hauppauge HD PVR looks good to me - its always the reply i get if i enquire on youtube when i see the best caps. plenty talking up avermedia game cap hd but its £150 vs $150 in its home market so i have no idea if that UK price will fall to approximate its USD price. And i've still not seen many good caps from it no matter how loud its fans shout. Seeing is believing as they say. But i'm talking £150 vs roxio for considerably less.
It should record the dashboard fine. Essentially, it should record whatever signal your machine is currently putting out, whether that be the dashboard, games, XBLA stuff, or movies.
Yeah it's very similar to Dazzle. Dazzle does the same thing but you have to play in SD.
I can't see why it wouldn't allow you to record the dashboard. I presume this product is like the 'dazzle' and other products.
Might go for this. There are plenty of tutorials on Youtube that can get you good quality on your recordings and the difference between this and a HD PVR isn't worth paying an extra £90-100 on.

crikey, this code still works!
yeah again you are right but find me a HDMI capture card that is cheap and post it. Never knew about the easycap releasing a new one so will be interesting to keep an eye on that. Anyway Quidco just tracked my order and I got £14.56 back.
It's component and no HDMI. So yes, we can play in 1080 resolution, but a real capture card with HDMI is better. And eaasycap, must release in one month a new model. (i talked with their team)
yeah you're right there but the full HD ones will cost well over £150 easily. The advantage this has over say easycap is that you can still play your games in 1080 while recording the footage. Easy cap forces your resolution to 480p and it is pretty terrible to play on.
Vista has a very good mpeg2 decoder included. XP requires you to supply it with one, which most people do without even realising it. There's no need to pay for a decoder. Some might like to buy DVD software, but even so, this wouldn't be my first choice.
seems to in vista. theres no reason to pay for dvd playback software, there are plenty of free codecs/media players out there.
Doesn't Windows Media Player do this for free?
Can get a DVD decoder free in the k-lite codec pack. There link to this product: http://www.roxio.co.uk/eng/products/cineplayer/vista/overview.html
