People are still getting the early failures with these, suggesting that Ryobi don’t care and are just shipping them on the hope that most users won’t use them enough to fail within the warranty, or won’t bother to return them. Also, most of the new designs use a locking clamp to hold the tool. This one still uses the Allen screw.

That's what happened to me. Didn't really use it until it was out of warranty and then it failed on first serious use. I have lots of Ryobi stuff but this is junk.

Reviews look poor, wonder how this compares to the Makita DTM51Z Multi-Tool

It doesn't the makita is much better. The one with the swivel head is a little better than this. The other one with the head that can go in 4 positions is good if you get one of the single speed modified ones on ebay. Out the box it's a liability.

The only ryobi tool that has caused me any grief. First one packed up after 18 months - replaced no quible under warranty - the replacement is still going but the switch is a real chore and have to faff about to get it going (fine once on). I'm sure mine was an older model than this (adjustable head). I have the Makita corded one too and (as you'd expect) is much more powerful but less convenient. Hopefully the newer Ryobi models have a bit more stamina.

Purchased this a few days back. Add the £3 spirit level to get free delivery and save a few quid.

These still have the faulty switches in them for some bizarre reason, more specifically the vibration breaks the weak solder joints holding the switch wires on as they aren't braced in any way.

Not true at all. They break around the motor tabs or the thermal fuse. Never seen this model break at the switch.
