18mm is about finger size, so it depends how much you want to cut off. If it has been trimmed before then growth particularly at the sides should be more even. It should be able to cut a bit larger branches by nibbling at them. At the top, growth is faster, so you'll probably need a lopper and a tree saw (not a bow saw, just a saw with coarse teeth and a narrow blade) as well.
The other problem with this sort of trimmer is that the weight is at the end of a long bar, so it's difficult and tiring to use, particularly at an angle. Commercial versions have the motor (usually petrol) at the handle end with only the cutter at the end of the pole. They're a lot more expensive though.

Good luck! Leylandi are a pain! They grown too quickly. IMO they need to be reduced to a manageable height no more than about 2 metres or less.
