I’ve been looking at the 2600, 2600x, 2700 and 3600. For budget gaming, I think this is the sweet spot

the 2600is only £110.

Fantastic deal
I have a sense these will be under £99 come black Friday, and for the price still a worthy chip for gaming or productivity.
Seems to be £150-160 on most other places so seems like a good deal!
Bargain
Looks like a good deal. Still doesn't look worth upgrading my OC'd 3570k (Only 17% single core improvements without the OC). I've never had a CPU so long (8 years now) but until gaming needs more I guess I'm saving money...
With a good choice of other components this should provide a 'base' for a great gaming machine with the possibilities of future upgrades.

I'd be paring this with 16gb of 2666-3000 memory and a rx580 8gb. Simplly as it offers the best bang of buck.

I just upgraded my OC 3570K, 16GB DRR3 , RX 580 from 7 years ago to the day to 2600x, DDR 4 3600, Vega 56 ... Difference is huge.
Just awaiting BF/CM for a reasonable 28"+ IPS
Go for it ....

If it was me I'd personally wait till black Friday. The 1600 is already well below £100 and that's a steal!

I might have found the budget for this CPU, a basic MB/RAM combo but without upgrading the RX 480 doesn't seem much point... I still seem more GPU bound than CPU.

The wife uses my pc to game on I'd have kept the same card otherwise but dropped on the Vega 56 for £150 new so couldn't say no

Lucky. My wife has never played anything more advanced than Lego harry potter so I very much have to keep my spending under control! I still find it amazing though that this CPU shows basically no benchmark improvement over a 3570k with Overclock - See Overclock Benchmark. I guess the extra cores and faster ram could help in some games but it shows how good an 8 year old chip can still be if you don't need lots of threads (most games still). I use to barely get 4 years out of CPU 10~15 years ago.
Still a damn good CPU ... Just a shame it take such a cooler back in the day .... Both @ 4.1GHz ...

Looking at recent price drops happening daily it's obvious now to see. I recently picked up 1 for £108.79 from Amazon for my daughter's build and got a game pass ultimate code for 3 months included, bargain buy!

Huh... It's almost like they want you to buy a new CPU every couple years

Yep. Single thread performance hasn't really improved since intels 2000 series. Don't get me wrong a high end intel (or 3000 series Ryzen) will be higher but comparing mid range now to high end then its not changed that much for single thread performance. Its more the multithread performance (4 vs 8 real cores) and RAM speeds that have improved. I remember when a budget chip could out perform a high end chip within about 3 years back around the millennium.

Edit: Its worth pointing out this is only due to the fact that these older chips OC so well. They therefore use a lot more power vs performance.

Thanks for confirming. I guess I'll keep the old girl running a bit longer!

The multi thread makes all the difference. Games like bf1 bottleneck like mad due to 4 cores only. With 12 threads the bottleneck is gone.

That's fair with a few games but for someone with an average GPU (like my rx 480) it's not going to be the limiting factor in 99% of games just yet. I'm sure it'll start changing soon though when the next gen consoles come out (currently 4 core but presumably going 8?).

Lower Res = CPU bottleneck

Damn it. My bad. Its a very low power 8 core though. I still don't believe someone like me with an rx 480 is going to see any big improvements going 8 core just yet. Its not like people on a budget (again like me) are going to be trying to hit 144+ FPS because we can't afford the monitors! I still believe for most people GPU is where the budget is best spent (Check out some of LinusTechTip junkyard war vids on youtube).

Wasnt that £300 on release though?
I can get a ten year old range rover for the same price as a new quashqui...
