Not seeing any significant advantage of this comparatively high price item compared to options eleswhere starting at under £20 + keyboard (or air mouse) of choice. Low £19 buys the box ex-UK ebay.co.uk/itm…759 or with keyboard £23 ebay.co.uk/itm…870 but would prefer own chioce of keyboard, and ideally confirmed to be rechargeable & with UK layout. For the Amazon lovers, there is small stock of 1GB/8GB S905 + keyboard at under £29 amazon.co.uk/dp/…XU/
hugely overpriced so cold from me
I've never head of 'Kodi' before - Is it basically a media streaming box to play music/videos from a computer on the network ?
Thanks AndyRoyd. I'm looking for a box which can:-

1. install kodi + addons
2. play android games
3. can have a gamepad
4. play HD movies and have spdif for 5.1 surround sound.

This is for the kids room and the 5.1 spdif is required because they have an older sony amplifier which has no hmdi.

What can you recommend that won't cost the earth?

Thanks

that's exactly it. it's been "hijacked" somewhat by these boxes as the de-facto name for piracy though as the many and varied add-ons will let you get most things for "free"
Don't pay any more than £30 for this box

for streaming, some will work like navi-x or cinema box but others will just load the repo but not display any content

yes mate, most streams are available on kodi. even cinema movies.
'Fully loaded' boxes make me laugh... Anyone who buys one is basically paying someone for spending half an hour downloading KODI and installing a 'build' that has hundreds of addons that you'll probably never use! A lot of people think they have to buy a box that says 'fully loaded' in order to get KODI... In fact, you can just download KODI from the Google play store. Then, set up KODI using a tutorial such as TV addons tvaddons.ag/fus…di/ Finally, customise your box with the addons you need from the various repos available... seo-michael.co.uk is a good place to start.

If the box is running Android, it will run Kodi and Android games to the level of performance related to the box's spec, in which case you probably want to optimise performance by considering a box with 2GB RAM.

3. can have a gamepad

Presumably a gamepad would be USB so if Android-compatible it should be OK.

Audio out options could also include AV-out L&R audio via 4-pole 3.5mm jack to phonos/RCAs - some boxes have that option rather than SPDIF.

Probably no need to spend more than high £20s, or as low as £19. S905-based or recently-released S905X-based boxes are probably the most cost-effective options ATM. An S905 box with 1GB RAM and AV-out is low £19 delivered ex-UK ebay.co.uk/itm…603 plus cable from £1.69, although probably best cover-all option would be new S905X 2GB RAM inc SPDIF at around £28/29 ex-China

Thanks very much AndyRoyd.

AUDIO - My audio will mainly be via the HDMI for standard tv, but my amp is a little on the old side, so the only way to get 5.1 DTS for movies is via the SPDIF/OPTICAL - Can the mini m8s ii play this?

GAMEPAD - What wired gamepad would you recommend? Or would a ps3 wireless pad work with these via bluetooth?

PERFORMANCE - To be honest I'd rather pay a little more than £20 if it means smoother/faster gameplay & movies and your recommendation of S905X sounds brilliant.

CONNECTION OF EXTERNAL STORAGE - Sorry, but I forgot to ask, but I already have a portable 2.5" 1tb hard drive with movies etc - would these work? If so, would NTFS format be detectable & movies playable?
not worth 20 quid

I don't have a Mini M8S II model so cannot categorically state either way. I have and have had S905 models that play DTS no problem (via Kodi or MXplayer) over HDMI but not attempted to use SPDIF so cannot advise.

Not a gamer so cannot assist. Have seen forum posts mentioning owners have BT PS3 pads working OK on S905 boxes, but check any box you purchase has internal bluetooth because some don't.

I often hook-up portable and external 2TB drives to my S905 boxes. NTFS is no problem to them and it is highly unlikely it would be a problem with the example boxes prev quoted. Only word of caution would be for a portable drive that obtains its power exclusively via the box: the PSU supplied with these boxes is typically rated at 10W max, so hooking-up a portable drive without external power is asking a lot of the PSU. It would be prudent to use a powered USB hub when a portable drive is connected to these boxes.

What if I used a usb stick instead as external storage? Would that still require a separate PSU?

Also have you heard of Geekbuying website? It seems they also have similar android boxes for decent prices.

USB sticks consume much less power than a hard drive and would (should) present no issue to the box's PSU.

Gearbest, Geekbuying, DealExtreme, Aliexpress & similar all shift this sort of kit at similar base prices and almost always have various "colourful" promotions available. Some of those vendors have EU-based warehouses to expedite delivery to UK & avoid any possibility of import fees, although EU warehouse stock may attract a higher price. DXs EU warehouse is the exception as it's based in... China !
That's very useful information, thanks Andy. I've decided to order the mini m8s ii as it should be more than ideal for watching movies and playing the odd game. It should also be fine (I hope!) to take it to their grandma's house to watch movies on a USB stick, right?

Cheers buddy. It's all ordered. I've never ordered from Gearbest before and hope I've chosen the correct options. I've gone for the following shipping method: "Priority Direct Mail (British Express) - 4-5 days". Also I've added the extra insurance for approx £1.50. At least if it's broke, then Gearbest will then sort it ou
