Light levels determine the sleep / wake cycles of both animals and humans. The desire to sleep is brought on by the secretion of Melatonin and the bright natural light. The light from a SAD lamp significantly reduces Melatonin, greatly improving our energy levels. Typical symptoms of SAD are depression, lethargy, anxiety, craving, social problems, sleep problems and loss of libido. These symptoms can be commonly resolved through the use of light boxes

thanks for this

I'i bought this but returned it as it was so large and wouldnt be so easy to use casually around the house. Might be worth having a look at it before buying to see if it fits your requirements.
Anyone with a recommendation for a smaller and more portable style at a good price i would be interested, thanks.

How does this compare to the Phillips one?

i have bought one weeks ago and its been brilliant with the dark mornings and miserable cloudy days, i use it in the morning with my cup of tea and its certainly perked me up, :)))

I've got the Phillips GoLite one which is lovely and small, but not a small price tag.

I got this one a couple of weeks ago and I feel it has worked some what in the short time I have had it. It is around the size of a DVD cover.

What do these actually do?

i like the idea of this but am scared that in 20 years there will be some research that links it to skin cancer. or is that me just being ridiculous?

They are just "cool daylight" white lights - giving out a higher temp.eqivalent light than normal light bulbs , say 6400k ,cool white, rather than the more common ~3000k "warm white".
You can buy energy saving bulbs that are "cool white" from £3.99
Cool white actually makes you feel cold -like the lights in an operating theatre or food counter!!

They are used by people who suffer from S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder) you use them in the morning to get the effect of the daylight, this makes them usually feel perkier through out the day.

I doubt it, normally I sit with it about 4 feet away, you don't sit and stare at it :-)

live for today and not worry about tomoz, these are not sunbed lights or i have not gained a tan, lol its simulates the daylight and makes you feel less tired etc with the short days,

I've got the A4 sized one of these and its fab - works well for me, I drag it out every year. Its also great for photography. If you sell on ebay, etsy or wherever and take photos of small items like jewellery or other things that are a pain to photugraph, then this is a good source of diffused light.

i have this for years. highly recommend it for the price.

thanks

What a shame, it seems that it's out of stock at the moment.
