Saffron £1 at Asda

28
Found 18th Jul 2013
Usually costs an arm and a leg, this particular brand being £2.76 normally, but down to £1 today!

Essential for Paella but also tasted great in stews and fish based dishes.

Found at the Killingbeck Asda in Leeds. Didn't have a yellow sticker, only saying it was reduced on the white tag so will presume its nationwide until told different.

Plenty of stock remained on the shelf.

I had a big obsession with Posh Spice as a kid.

It cost my Mum a fortune in Saffron.

HOW MANY KILOS FOR THIS PRICE

There was a whole bunch in the Swindon store on Sunday. I'm sure it was £1 as well.

Can't quite see from the pic. What make is that?

Spanish saffron is the best

Ok here are some answers:

brightsky this is a 0.5g packet. Turn off the caps lock there's no need to shout

lowrieh1 it is from a brand called 'Fiddes Payne'

jat2474 Glad to hear it, so it appears it could well be nationwide!

Also has a sell by date of Feb 2014 so plenty of life in it.

I'm just mad about saffron...

Saffron Ice cream. Mmmmmmm.....

It's not on the website, but not sure about instore.

No way! Super hot. Off to Asda,

Not essential for paella. Most Spanish use cheap food coloring.

I have a 8 gram packet of top quality saffron in my spice cuppboard. I'm telling you how it really is in spain. I should know, after living there for 12 years.

saffrons wild about me.........

Sorry anyone who replaces Saffron with food colouring is a philistine and should not be allowed near a kitchen. .I buy my saffron from Morocco or Spain.

They call me mellow yellow.

Did the price label show the indicative price of £2000/kg? oO

That's quite a keen price for saffron, so Asda here I come! Methinks it may be time for saffron buns..... yummy!

Yeah I think it's normally approximately £7000/kg in Tesco.

The price of Saffron over here makes me sad. My brother just got back from Tunisia. He got approximately 30g (£200ish?) for £8. Insanely cheap!

You either need to make it clearer that you're making poor jokes. Or, reevaluate your life.

I don't think I have ever heard of paella being made with food colouring :s

Great find though for saffron the price of it usually deters me from making my favourite dish!

Had some Paella earlier for dinner. Certainly tasted pretty amazing, yet the girlfriend cooked so not sure how much saffron she used in it

**** paella. However, this is a good deal for saffron. The cheapest saffron I ever bought was 50g for £1.5 but that was in Tibet.

i read a good book about spices (inc saffron) - the book is called SPICE!!

as someone implies above, the asda version isn't likely to be top notch.

Not drama honesty saffron has a wonderfull delicate flavour and cannot be replced with a colouring not drama just a Chef. And certainty not a Queen I'm a Republican.
