try this

Just add a bit to rice. I doesn't really add any flavour it's more for colour.

Cold, not worth its weight in gold

Got some from Lidl today, I usually get my saffron from Ebay it's a lot cheaper, I paid about a fiver for 4g delivered , the Lidl size is 0.1g, so to buy 4g from Lidl would cost over 20 quid!. Still cheaper than the Schwartz stuff though.

A kilo will set you back £10,400

Bet you cant use saffron as a form of currency though

Not true. It has a very distinctive taste. Try some Iranian dishes and tell me it doesn't.

Brought 35g from Tunisia last month for approx £3

There's saffron and there's saffron, the Lidl stuff won't be very good quality. Not because its Lidl but because its way too cheap.

I bought this from both morocco and tunisia, very cheaply, but couldn't use the amount we got quickly enough and it lost it's strength.

bought this from lidl and yep, was more expensive than the stuff we got from the berber pharmacies, but excellent quality and just enough for two or three recipes if you're just experimenting with the stuff!

adds a lovely smokey flavour to paella!

So Tesco would like you to believe.........

LIDL have a different philosophy which allows them to provide some things at a bargain price - and whilst this might not be "first quality", nothing you buy at any other supermarket will be either.

The difference is, LIDL don't have it all the time - they sell it when they can get it at a good price - and you get it at a good price too.

That sounds too cheap - do you realise how many stamens are needed to make 1g???
Does it come as stamens or as a powder? If as stamens, anything that isn't red isn't spice - so the cheaper saffron has more yellow style attached to bulk it up and sometimes other things too.
If powder, then the addition of turmeric and paprika is common ......

It's stamens from this seller there are other sellers, have a look and tell me what you think, I have bought them from Ebay before, and got that distinct saffron flavour from them.

You'd loose your bet, spices have a long history as currency. That aside, anything can be used as currency if both parties agree.

If you have genuine and quality saffron the flavour it imparts is very distinctive, to the point that it needs to be used sparingly.

If you are not getting flavour then you most likely have fake saffron, sold to unsuspecting tourists in bazaars, that stuff is harvested from various flowers, tulips and such that have red stamens. The real stuff only comes from one type of plant.

FWIW a kg of gold is currently about £24,500, so this saffron is obviously the cheap stuff! (_;)

I also buy from this seller and can confirm it seems to be the real stuff and great value - much cheaper than this LIDL deal. The LIDL offer is usually for 0.1g, whereas Tesco/Asda etc, usually sell it in 0.4g or 0.5g packs, so the price from all the supermarkets isn't so vastly different on a price per gram basis.

A friend recently brought a large pack of "saffron" back from Morocco - paid a few pounds for a pack of maybe 50g? Only trouble was it wasn't Saffron! The market sellers in Africa package up various things as saffron, but it really isn't. Quite often it's safflower, or something similar they have manufactured (often with dyes). The smell, flavours and colours when you use it are quite different. As a Cornishman I grew up on saffron cake and buns and find the smell and taste very distinctive. It's powerful stuff and when I make saffron cake/buns 0.5g is enough to make two medium loaves or about 32 buns. I also actually wonder if it's possible to become addicted to saffron because if I go too long without making something saffrony I'm sure I get withdrawal syptoms!

I've added some heat to this deal as it is the cheapest in the high street. However I'd urge anyone who does any serious cooking with saffron to buy it in bulk as it is much better value (and far less wasteful). 0.1g is a piffling little amount, and buying it in 0.5g packs is much more sensible. If it's well packaged and stored sensibly genuine saffron will keep for up to 3 years.

EDIT: Just checked my last on-line purchase and paid <£9 for 12 x 0.5g packs. Works out at <75p for 0.5g, or about 1/4 the price of this LIDL offer (per gram).

surely it should say £5.90 for 1g not for 100g?

Ice cold, cheaper in Tesco.

(50p per 0.1g - this is 59p per 0.1g)

Stupid marketing, Lidl selling a tiny amount to make it look cheaper.

This would have been inferior Saffron and not the real deal, been caught out like this befor, am sure the Lidl one is fine, TKMaxx also do good quality saffron for £3.99 for a gram which is cheapest I can find it in this country and about the same price as the good stuff from Spain or canaries. I use it in paella and it's easy to get conned with the stuff that looks the part but isn't.

I have bought saffron in Tunisia, and it's ALL fake. Safflower. Not saffron. You got ripped off. 100%, I guarantee you, it is fake.

Same thing in Morocco and similar countries - just don't buy saffron from these tourist trap market stalls, it's worthless.

Better off buying in Tesco.

Looks fake. Spanish saffron production is a fraction of world total, it's the most expensive there is, and that is just too cheap.

I once bought some cheap Saffron turned out to be dried daisy stalks dyed with Tumeric.

Bought this last week, but never posted the deal. Didn't think it would be top strength, but certainly a deal.

Nobody grows their own then? That would be an interesting comaprison of flavour (fresh) vs internettenweb and overseas purchases.

FWIW the stuff you buy from this e-bay seller seems to be sourced from http://saffronbynipra.com/

I'm no saffron expert, but I can spot the obvious fakes, and whilst this isn't the finest saffron I've ever bought it's not an obvious fake either. (The smell is right, the colour of anything you steep it in is right, the shape and colour of the saffron itself after steeping seems right, the taste is right, etc). So, if it's a fake (and like you I have my suspicions at this price) it's actually a very good one!

If you're going to buy 5x the quantity it is of course inevitable that the relative price will be lower. Go and have a read through a GCSE economics textbook.

Also, many people don't want 0.5g of Saffron and just want to try a dish or two out so the Lidl pack is perfect.
