£10 in Sainsburys in Norton. Still £20 on the website. Doubt it's national but could be as seemed to be discontinuing it.

this is the watered down US version, if you want to taste the 'original' recipe you'll be wanting Old J

as for discontinuing the brand, i can't see that, sainsburys always have this on offer
Got to say this doesnt taste nice at all with coke anymore.since they changed the mix
Stuff like Kraken / red Crab is far superior tasting along with Havana 7 if you wish to avoid "spice"

Tastes ok neat

Ironically, Old J is more watered down - Sailor Jerry's is (and was) 40%, Old J is 35%...Old J Gold at 40% is what you really want

I don't know who to believe, but the both taste better than Kraken (which tastes of nothing).

I'd say believe your taste buds. I love Old J but have never tasted the Gold. I've never tried Sailor Jerry either but can say that Old J knocks all the Bacardi variants into a cocked hat. I really liked Redlegs but not as much but, saying all that, I also loved Kraken and rarely mix rum unless it is cheap stuff.

For me, the ultimate is Old J Tikki Fire which is about 70+ abv. With ice it is awesome and I'm pretty confident it'll stand mixing. But at 36 quid a bottle it's not cheap.
So... is it national?
Lovely with ginger beer
Red leg all the way, but I'll have this, kraken, woods, navy Spiced, ovd and dark morgans maybe some rumbollian also.
I agree it's not what it used to be but for £10 it's done the trick

Good article, thanks for posting it.
Was aware of recipe change but unaware of Old J, keen to check it out.
I'm surprised Whetherspoons hasn't taken Old J or RedLeg on.

Bought a bottle of Red Leg and was less than impressed.

Old J is ok, Lambs spiced is still my current fav

Gotta agree kraken was dissapointing
Give me a bottle of El Dorado (_;)

I'd buy this for a tenner though.

More for me then
at £10 this one is still worth buying
Never actually tried sailor Jerry. Lidl have a knock off of Captain Morgan called Captain Cook or something which is decent. Agree on Kraken, just doesn't taste of much.

Love how the thread starts at £10 bottles of Supermarket gear then someone always drops in something 3 times the price haha, happens on every thread on UKHD.

For the record I like El Dorado too, also very fond of Diplomatico, especially the 2000 Single Barrel and Ambassadors reserve which are both in my collection (for now)
Did anyone manage to pick up a bottle elsewhere?
Which supermarkets stock Old J as I've never seen it on the shelves anywhere but would like to try some?

Amazon has old J
I was disappointed with old J I bought the gold one, though maybe my tastebuds have grown up since the first recipe. I actually prefer the new recipe now with a slice of lime squeezed in, my younger self would disappointed in me.

Always amazes me how people call HUKD "HDUK" or "UKHD"

Lime is quite overpowering, all it's doing is neutralizing the cheap taste of SJ, may as well buy Morgans Spiced which is cheaper and squeeze lime in that instead, similar taste and you save money

Not really rum with lime is the way to do it for me with most of the mixer rums. I would never dare buy captain Morgan's spiced as its not technicall rum (like that old J non gold stuff). I'm into the Havana Especial for general mixing and Ron Zacappa for sipping. It's all about personal taste tbh the Old J really is too sweet for me.

not technically rum??? c'mon :)........the 'standard' 40% applies mostly to chile and venezuela and last i checked i was in the UK, besides it doesn't really apply as it's spiced/gold rum anyway

Lime kills any flavour, so if it's the norm for you then u have practically been drinking alcoholic lime juice?

granted though, the old SJ and Old J are very sweet, i understand how that can be overpowering for some, especially when mixed with coca cola. I don't drink neat spirits any more so i need a mixer these days.

Read the bottle of any 'rum' in the UK less than 37.5% it literally cannot state rum, it must say "a spirit drink made with rum" Look at actual Old J compared to the gold stuff online actual old J says spirit drink made with Caribbean rum. Classification of alcohols do apply here.

I honestly don't think a tiny slice of lime in my mixer rum is going to spoil it any less than the Coke I have added. It's personal taste and I like lime.

Yeah, that sounds like the EU for you.... but Rum is defined by how it's fermented, distilled and stored, the percentage is a silly law.

It reminds me a bit of the Chocolate in america where unless the cocoa content is high enough it cannot be called chocolate, it's rather silly.

It is true that any mixer affects the taste of a drink, blackcurrant is one of the best for masking the taste of something you wouldn't normally like. I know people who hate guiness and lager, but add some blackcurrant and they can happily drink it, lime isn't far behind, depends on how much you add of course but a squeeze of lime can mask the original taste so much that you may be liking the lime and not the drink you put it in.
