Does the £1 spaghetti taste any different to the 17p Aldi one or even the 49p Aldi one. I haven't tried any expensive ones like this before.

I buy the fusili because the shape is different. Each fusili is bigger than a regular fusili and I think it tastes better they don't all clump together in a pasta bake which normal fusili tends to do.

Its more about texture than taste to be honest - nobody eats pasta without a sauce do they? But the expensive ones have higher quality durum flour, so you can cook them to the point where the texture is just right. Cheaper ones, this is very difficult and they usually end up too soggy. Personally, I try to always buy DeCecco pasta, which is often on offer at £1 a packet, but is a brand that people actually buy and use in Italy.

Yes it is much smoother tasting

Your pretty much on the money there. Poor quality pastas tend to leach starch earlier in the cooking process than the better quality brands which makes it more difficult to get it just right, hence the soggy, claggy results.

Cannot argue against DeCecco, we use that and Barilla.

I'm going to try this pasta for £1 to see if I can 'taste the difference'

Ok I went out and bought some " £1 taste the difference" from Sainsbury, "45p specially selected" from Aldi and also their 17p "regular". I used my spaghetti measure and bundled one of each and tied them up with string. they all went in the same pan of salted and oiled water. I didn't label them unfortunately but that didn't matter because they all tasted and felt in texture identically after being cooked for the same duration. I suppose there are going to be pasta snobs along with everything else (coffee, iPhones, Sonos etc). I think M-z is mildly correct about the duram wheat, not about the quality but the content
