Thanks Currychops

I have an 80 Gb IDE connected h-d already

If I bought this one would I connect it to existing h-d and set jumpers to slave and original to master?

Yes you could ..but my advice would be to use the samsung as the master...if you use discwizard (can be downloaded free from www.seagate.com) you can transfer your data easily to the new drive..disc wizard works with any make of drive.

Hey Currychops. I don't know much about hard drives. Any idea how this compares to a 250 GB Seagate Barracuda® 16MB Cache? Wanting to stick it in a USB/Firewire enclosure.

I would imagine the Seagate will be a lot better.

What is the actual quality of these Samsung drives like, I just want a cheapo 250-320GB hard disk to store stuff on, but I want it to be reliable.

I dislike Maxtor drives with a passion, WD & Seagate are great, they are just a bit more expensive.

250 GB Seagate Barracuda® 16MB Cache 7200rpm ATA100 oem (Manufacturer's 5yr Warranty) £54.75 Inc VAT

tenner more but better warranty + bigger cache

Samsung drives are supposed to be very reliable. They're not the fastest drives, but they are pretty quiet.

I suppose for piece of mind you could go for a seagate since all their drives come with a 5yr warranty - not that it means they won't fail, just means that you'll get a replacement if it fails within 5yrs.

Yes I have 2 Samsungs and they have been extremely reliable and very quiet...do not be influenced by the cache size as this makes very little difference to data transfer speeds..PCPRO tests invariably have Samsung drives as the best.

It's really up to you..yes Seagate do have a 5 year warranty as opposed to 3 years on other brands so that may be a greater influence to some purchasers.

Thanks for that Currychops

can you please recommend any good external USB/Firewire enclosure for this hard drive as I wanted to have a similar setup. Sorry if it is a silly question but how do you supply power to it? Does the enclosure come with a power supply built in? Thanks.
