I have seen this Samsung 55” q80 qled tv has dropped in price to £999 this morning, also with the option to pay in 9 months. What is the difference between this and the 55” q70 which is now £799? Is it worth spending £200 more?

No, sadly.
It seems to have hit around £1500 most places and stayed.
I think I'm going to wait till new year and see the prices on Q90 and the LG C9 and buy then given the 2020 models will be on the horizon.

No nothing at all. I bought the Q90R with the Q80R soundbar, It was an amazing deal and unlikely to be repeated for quite some time if ever. Black Friday is really disappointing on the TV front I think.
This model is good, way better than a standard LED set, but for some reason despite being mid-range in the QLED range it has some issues which make it a tough call over the lower end Q70R.

The Q70R has double the contrast ratio, so blacks are much better but it is only about half as bright (750nits to 1,200nits). It also has a highly reflective screen. It has less dimming as well, but the contrast makes up for it. It’s pretty cheap as well co soldering what you get.

The Q80R has worse blacks and crushes them a lot (so dark scenes are made overly dark), but it’s much brighter and reflects very little. It has more powerful dimming, but the contrast issues almost cancel that out. It’s also £200 more expensive.

Basically, if you’re on a budget under a grand I’d go for the Q70R in as big as a size as you can find. Richer Sounds are doing the 55” for £799, so you might find the 65” for £1,000. If spending over £1,000, I’d go for the Q85R in 55”. It’s vastly superior and, as you’ll read in every review, almost as good as the top of the range Q90R which costs about £1,500 (if you can find one in stock).
Ended up getting the Sony KD55AG8BU and the Sony X8500 with Google home mini, hdmi cable and 6 months spotify for £1500. That'll do me.

Any idea how the Q70R compares to a comparable Sony or Panasonic?

In all the reviews I’ve seen the Q70R compares favourably to Sony models of the same price. By can get brighter whites, but blacks aren’t as good. But it’s a very close call between all Samsung and Sony. Not sure about Panasonic, but I hear good things. However they usually cost more.

Thanks - what would say the Q70s direct competitors are? Looking at the Q70R just wanna make sure I've done some thorough research

Mine is currently tracking at 1% but supposedly currys ups the amount once they confirm the sale.
I’m still on pending atm
cash back rate is still pending but the amount is not 15%
