SAMSUNG 960 Evo m.2 Internal SSD - 500 GB with a free copy of Far Cry 5 £190.80 @ Currys - matching Amazon UK

First time I'm posting, I hope some will find it helpful.

There was another drop the Amazon price for the Samsung 960 EVO 500gb: it's now down to £188.99. £190.80

Below £190, that was my threshold, so I pulled the trigger on that one, especially since I'm sure I'll enjoy Far Cry 5.

It wasn't so easy getting the price match, I had to order over the phone. The reason is Currys made a mistake with their product name, the 960 500gb is marked as both 2.5 inches and m.2. Because that simply doesn't exist, they tell you the Amazon product isn't equivalent.

UPDATE: Amazon is now at £190.80 (still good though!)

That's a tiny drive, you won't be able to fit anything on it.

You managed it get it wrong both times you wrote it.

I don't know the specs of your current NVMe drive, maybe use bench to compare possible gain?

In terms of space, I think 256gb is very tight, but I'm not sure it justifies the move to 500gb.

Instead, I'd replace the 7K1000 by a MX500 1tb. Lots of capacity, still reasonably cheap and fast enough to make a big difference when running programmes from it.

If money is no matter and you don't want to make any concession, I think there's a deal at the moment for a 960 EVO 1TB from Amazon Germany. About £350.

£170 is amazing for that drive. I'm too squeamish to order from abroad though, even Amazon. Some here actually order those massive 35 inches ultra wide screens from Spain, so I guess they wouldn't mind!

Amazon are fine I've ordered from Amazon US and any problems the customer service would sort you out stress free.

Cant say for most shops like i use aliexpress and gearbest fine but others don't like em. I think its just what your expectations are.
Awesome Thanks
Says £224.99 now.

Sorry should have mentioned also have a 2tb HDD in the laptop but the 256 NVME is mostly for the OS ETC. Is this nvme better in terms of speed or would it be slower than the standard MSI one?

You have to request a price match with Amazon.co.uk. It's a bit of a pain, but it saves £36 and you get the game.

The performance part, I wouldn't know. You'd probably need to run a bench on your laptop and compare with reviews of the 960. If yours is a NVMe, the performance shouldn't be that different? I assume the gap is mostly noticeable with regular SSDs.

Would this be faster than the 256 version?

I'm sure the 256gb version is great already, but reviews question its significance in the 'super high speed' segment, Tom's Hardware even assume that Samsung hesitated to release the 256gb: tomshardware.com/rev…tml

Their views on the 256gb: 'Everyone has done something that they regretted as soon as they took the action. Samsung may feel that way about the 960 EVO 250GB because it took the low-capacity model down one step too far. Using lower density flash should have helped, but the final result doesn't match our, or your, EVO series expectations.'

You put the part number of the 128GB Samsung NVMe drive. Here's a comparison of the 256GB vs the 500GB EVO 960...

ssd.userbenchmark.com/Com…072

So yes, the 960 EVO is a lot faster in benchmarks. Your drive performs almost identically to a SATA 850 SSD, despite the limitations of the SATA interface...

ssd.userbenchmark.com/Com…477

So you should see some improvement, but it will depend on what you're doing and if there any other limitations on the NVMe interface on your laptop.

I'm not sure I'd bother, unless you want the extra space. it is a good drive for this price.

That's quite an old review. I don't think that view is born out by the benchmarks. The 500Gb variant is listed as the 10th fastest drive and the 250GB version is close behind in 13th...

Thanks. I'm not surprised, the 960 evo is great generally. I actually hesitated a long time, but Amazon now sells the 256gb for more than £100, and they've lowered the price on the 500gb to £188, so that's helped me a bit

Just purchased one myself. Should hopefully be here tomorrow......
Amazing how much nvme drives have come down in price. Benchmarks aside it would be interesting to see if you got any real world performance over just buying a couple of standard 256gb ssds and running them in r0 (I use this for my steam game folder).
Picked this up during eBay December promo. It’s an awesome drive, very fast. Shame I wasn’t entitled to free game of assassin’s creed at the time
I swear I saw this for £140-ish minus the game a couple of days ago.
NAND prices are coming down, expect lots more SSD deals and price reductions.

I have a 850 Evo. How much of an upgrade would this be? Im not too clued up on hard disk types after HDD and SSD

hahaah i hope this is a joke... how is this 500GB tiny? i've still seen people using laptops with 120GB essentially you're supposed to use it a main boot drive and keep your data on secondary drive but anyway 500GB is plenty! Myself I'm happily using a 250GB version with mx300 750GB as second and 3tb HDD for storage

Check out the video I've linked in the description. It sold it for me as it shows how NVMe can bring quite an improvement in the real world.

I have this as my C-Drive and an 850 Evo as a second. There is no difference in reality. If I ran some benchmark tool I'm sure this would say it's faster, but I don't notice it. Windows 10 boots in about 5 seconds (after BIOS) with this for me, but I wouldn't 'upgrade' to this from a decent SSD.

The video in the orignal post shows what real world difference NVMe can make. I think it's an improvement, but I agree with you, nothing massive. Nothing like moving from a HD to a SSD.

The reason why I bought it is because I needed a bit more space, and I couldn't turn away the boost in performance.

For £20-30 more, I could have got a 1tb mx500. Which I might do in the near future to replace my mechanical drive?

As my main drive though, there was no way I was going to pass on an m.2 NVMe. It's available for a decent price, I was even going to get 256 at least.

Far Cry 5 won't be lost on me either, I played and enjoyed the last 3 of them.
in the market for a new SSD and also a farcry 5, but don't much fancy spending 200quid on a 500gb drive when you can pick up a 1tb SSD for a few quid more. Appriciate that this is prob faster though.... are there any other drives which are including FC5?
So what happens if I want to return the ssd but I've redeemed the game...

You get Far Cry with the EVO 860, which is a bit cheaper, but not NVMe.
