Didn't strike me as a massive bargain either to be honest!

John

The PS3 will have a Blueray player in it and should cost around half this price.

This model costs less than £500 in the US. Avoid at all costs.

on da ps3 u cant wacthc pirate movies. not that i watch them just telling i put it on here as i could find any and somthing but very expensive to me.

Welcome to the next equivalent of betamax.

How much??
Not worth it in my opinion. :-(

Wise up

£999

IMO wait for a hybrid player that will play both formats.

Why would you want to purchase a hi-def dvd player to watch pirate films?

Also how do you know what you can and can't do with the PS3?

I can guarantee that within 3 months of it's release the PS3 will be flashed to run anything.

360 hasnt and its been about a year now nearly...

Ive seen videos of a 360 running chipped stuff but it doesnt seem widely and publicly known/available

Not that I know of anyway

the 360 HD player does not conform to any HD standard, it has no HDCP so it wont be able to play any HD-DVD that has any kind of copy protection, they have also said it wont play any games(not sure about that point), so tbh yeah £129 or what ever it is seems cheap now, but quite expensive for a shinny brick. Unless of course the movie industry happens to wake up one morning and just forgets to add HDCP or has a change of heart.

As for the PS3 i was under the impression the "media" player side of the device was based on a linux distro. So it should be quite easily be adapted to do what you want.

1 year probably

bluray will be a total flop if everything else sony have done is anything to go by, look at Minidisc and UMD. When they try to introduce a new format it never takes off.

HD DVD will be the next step just becuse it is cheaper and most movie manufacturers want to gain maximum profit.

It is a bargain if you have £100k burning a hole in your pocket. :giggle:

Build a HTPC with a Dual DVB-Tuner, Blu-ray burner, GFX card with HDCP / HDMI output, 300GB+ drive, E6400 and 2GB RAM for £950ish quid, that's worth the money, and about the same size !!

More than likely i'm gonna hold out and get a hybrid, though temptation might cause me to treat the 360 to an HD-DVD drive in the next few months, as I'd like to at least start building a reasonable of collection of titles to watch for when I do splash out on a high end player.

Not particularly wanting to start an argument about the next-gen optical media formats but I think HD-DVD will emerge victorious. Sony can't be trusted anymore thanks to Betamax and UMD

Edit: Also, HD-DVD seems to be a natural progression from the current format whilst BluRay seems to exist simply because Sony says so.

Yeah, the Xbox 360 firmware was hacked and updated ages ago to allow it to play copied games...search the relevant fourms!

Ill take the PS3 thanks!

You know you wont get any Disney on HD-DVD - which basically puts me out of that equation.

Same here.

BlueRay is destined to fail, just like Sony's previous attempts.

To ve fair, not all previous Sony attempts to capture market failed. Walkman and CD (jointly invented with Philips) were quite a success.

By that are we talking a lack of HDMI cable?

MS have stated in the past that one will become available, when there's the right level of demand for one.

If i remember rightly, the cd was invented in the 60's and Philips manufactured them in the 80's.

Sony and Philips created CD-R's and CD-ROMS

AFAIR, CD Audio was also created by Sony and Philips, they still have patents on it. I think only the Picture CD (aka Kodak Photo CD) wasn't made by these. They also specc'ed VCD (Video CD), at least that is what stated on a spec.

not specifically hdmi, hdcp can work over DVI.

I can see it now, you buy a HD-DVD player works with a few films to begin with, while the momentum of hd/bluray kicks off, 6 months down the line HDCP is put on all new releases, microsoft then release a new version of the xbox 360 that you now need to buy to be able to use the player you bought in the first place.

And people say the ps3 is expensive

Hmm never buy a 1st generation Blu-Ray player, it's like beta testing products.
