NB just for note, still a good deal though:-

The BD-P1400 is a Profile 1.0 player and not 1.1, so it won't support advanced features found on forthcoming BonusView Blu-ray discs like Resident Evil: Extinction - and like all Profile 1.0 players (with the exception of the PS3) it can't be upgraded to 1.1

Aw, that sucks xD

The BDP-1500 is only a few more bob and that can be upgraded to 2.0

QUOTE: Firmware upgradeable to profile 2.0
So it must have a Ethernet port

Amazon had the BD-P1500 for £120 with two free Blu-Ray movies yesterday - has gone up to £140 today :-(

if upgradeable - hot if not freezing

i have the 1400, got it for £45 in a clearance drive at work earlier this year though so i couldn't pass it up that price.
very good player, definitely upgrade the firmware. And im pretty sure its stuck to a 1.0 profile, but im not that fussed, who even uses that bd-live stuff anyway?! haha.

BD-live isn't forthcoming, it's very much out there - I've already played several discs containing "live" content.

It's actually better value than I expected.

Even negating that though, a player that won't upgrade over ethernet is just a pain in the ass - upgrades are released all the time and burning CDs is not a solutions, it's a crappy workaround.

just to confirm you can not upgrade this to 2.0 (live) as i looked into all of this when I got the 1500 but... Although I have not done this myself I am 99% sure there is a working DVD region free code for this (1500 has not) which may sway some to it if your into all that kind of thing.

to confirm, you can upgrade the firmware on this via ethernet to improve performance but you cant upgrade it to profile 2.0.

anyone got any experience with the bdp1600, cant seem to find any reviews on it, this is hot tho

Im voting very hot on this one... I have a 1080P 40" Samsung and would love to invest in BluRay, but im holding off till they drop below the £60 mark (gonna be a good 2 years for that...)

This is the first sub-£100 player i've seen though and even if it is stuck on 1.0 profile, that shouldnt make the slightest difference imo.

BD-Live features have included internet chats, scheduled chats with the … BD-Live features have included internet chats, scheduled chats with the director, internet games, downloadable featurettes, downloadable quizzes, and downloadable movie trailers.

Sorry, but I would buy BluRay for the superior resolution video... If I wanted to play internet games, go to chat room/sessions, download quizzes and trailers... Well, that's what my PC is for. BD-Live is just a gimmick imo and I cant imagine many people pulling their noses up at this deal just because it doesnt do BD-Live/Profile 1.1 etc.

I also have a 40" 1080p Samsung, the 310 surround sound system with DVD makes standard DVD's look really good, worth a punt while you wait for blue ray to drop below £60

Anyone know when these are likely to come down in price? Still a bit too pricey for me waiting for them to get to £60/70.

Does it play PS3AVCHDs?

the PS3 is the worst blu ray player out there, it doesn't transport the HD sound, it sends it in PCM and not bit-stream so you can never get true HD surround sound, from it. hahahaha for PS3, lol,#

This player does more than the PS3 in terms of a Blu-ray player.

i dont have an over priced speaker system that supports True HD, so i couldn't give a monkies.

did u read my post before u replied?

btw: it may not be the best BD player anymore, but i'd like to see anything come close to the amount of features it has for the price.
Games, BD, Photos, Music, Web, TV, AVCHD, HD-Rips!

oh yeah, it would be overpriced wouldn't it to have speakers!!!

well lots of blu ray players now more features than the PS3 as a blu ray player alone.

honestly why would you go blu ray and substantial disc costs for HD visuals and not sound.....

you can get truehd surround from the ps3. Dolby TrueHD can still be decoded inside the PS3 and sent as uncompressed audio to the AV receiver, but if the AV receiver has an integrated decoder it can't be used instead of the PS3's decoder.

culture.joystiq.com/200…ii/

furthermore, the ps3 is not the worst blu-ray player out there. that is a big generalisation. it is not the best nor the worst but to say it is the worst is just plain wrong.

it is overpriced if the speaker system itself costs more than the PS3!

i go Blu-ray because of the obvious picture quality difference compared to DVD.
i cant tell whether something is using AC3, 5.1, DTS, TrueHD... or whatever else it has, so why would i fork out hundreds of pounds for it?

now STFU & GTFO.

what are PS3AVCHDs just got a ps3 off a mate for £180 with 3 games 4 months old
so new to all this
thanks in advance

AVCHD is a codec that is used mostly to fit HD content onto a dvd, uptil recently the ps3 has been about the only thing that played them hence the ps3 part, but now most br players will play them too.
Thing is, they are generaly used for dodgy copys of br discs and are usualy found on torrent sites, so I can't figure out why sony are allowing player manufacturers to put support in the players.

Some of these people that are saying they have 40" 1080p televisions, and good branded ones - why the hell did you buy it if you are just gunna watch DVDs on it? Get some good source content to fully enjoy it!!

I'm not just moaning about getting a HDTV, as its sometimes nice to upgrade and have something new, like an LCD TV, however you dont need to go 1080p unless you want to take advatage of it. You could have saved some dosh and gone for a cheaper model.

I have a 32" Sammy (only 720p and about 1.5 years old now) - I do play movies on it that are in DVD format, but I game on it, and I used to be able to enjoy HD-DVD with my add-on, but that plan failed lol!! I plan on torrenting some HD content if I cant get it on HD-DVD. I may upgrade to Blu-Ray soon though, start of winter perhaps.......actually no, I'll probably be a poor student by then.

I know what you mean, you can also get dual layer DVDs, which work on Xbox 360, PS3 and DVD players - you can put about 8.5GB of content on there, which is enough for a High Def movie, certainly in 720p anyway. They can encode in mp4 so you can stream to ps3 or xbox, or some players will play certain mp4 files on the disc.

I would normally fully agree with you... Personally though I have an Xbox 360 and try to buy 1080P resolution games for it. Besides that, I have a Western Digital HD Media Player which plays 1080P MKV's (ahem, torrent downloads) beautifully. I also have a 10m HDMI cable connecting my PC to it from the other room (my office) which plays a 'clone' image from my normal monitor, just for those times I want to browse HUKD in 1080P resolution ;-)

So despite not having a BluRay player, I actually have a use for my 1080P telly :whistling:

I have a JVC crt HDTV, outputs 1080 no probs and the picture quality (especialy the blacks and dark areas) far surpasses anything I have ever seen an LCD do (I have seen some massivly expensive plasmas that come close) "only" 36" though, but I sit about 5-6' away from it so it still looks great with hd content streamed from my xbox.

i am sorry but you are strictly not correct. Your PS3 will automatically decode TrueHD (and DTS-HD MA) into uncompressed PCM. The number of channels of PCM audio you hear is determined by your output options. If you connect the PS3 to a receiver that can handle uncompressed audio via HDMI and you have a surround sound speaker setup you will hear up to 7.1 channels of PCM. If you have anything less than HDMI PCM will be output in two channels.

i just don't understand why you keep saying things that are just plain wrong.

faq.en.playstation.com/cgi…w=1

1 To output in 7.1 channel audio you must be connected via the HDMI OUT connector on the PLAYSTATION 3 system to a display or receiver that is compatible with Linear PCM 7.1 Ch. supported by Dolby TrueHD or a similar format.

2 The PLAYSTATION 3 system does not support output from the DTS-HD 7.1 channel. DTS-HD 7.1 channel audio is output from a 5.1 or lower channel.
