Thanks for the deal but I heard on BBC that Blue Ray players are not future proof as in newer models are soon to be released so is it worth getting this now?

This is a profile 1.0 player, and is not upgradeable to profile 1.1 or 2.0

As such, it will not be able to access extra features on profile 1.1 disks, and it will not be able to use any online features on 2.0 disks.

Not a good deal IMHO, for £80 or so more you can get a PS3 which complies with profile 1.1 now and will be upgradeable to 2.0 in the future when those players are finalised.

I won't be buying this, voted cold.

better to get a PS3 surely?

I agree not upgradeable not worth while voted cold

Lan Connection | Yes | This allows for connection to the Internet for firmware upgrades and access to other features

Yes it does, but for v1.1 and v2.0 there are hardware requirements like minimum amounts of memory which this probably (I'm almost certain) doesn't come close to meeting.

As an analogy, my old laptop could download a demo of crysis just fine. It hasn't got a hope in hell of running it.

Not great as it's only Profile 1.0. Still if you're happy with something that is already outdated and don;t want any extra features, go for it.

Waste of time, get a PS3 for £70 more which supports profile 2.0, has divx playback and USB ports

Best price I can see available for that item- therefore hot!

trustedreviews.com/hom…/p1review of player today. Confirmed that it can't be upgraded to higher profiles

As there are no profile 1.1 or 2.0 players out in UK/Europe yet or indeed disks? not sure the validity of the argument.

1.1/2/0 will give you PiP commentaries when available, and access to online extras (pointless going by what hd-dvd have done so far!)

all the extras should still be playable on 1.0 machines.

also the samsung bd-p1400 is upgradeable to be Multi Region for DVD & Blu Ray something the PS3 cant do.

Only 1.1 spec player i know of (apart from ps3) is the forthcoming Panasonic Bd-30 due march ish, for around 500 euros (allegedly)

Multiregion for for DVD AND Blu-ray is exactly what I want! - How can I make this player multiregion and how much will it cost?

Great price for a blu-ray, good if not bothered about upgrade

yet...

Some people don't seem to be able to grasp the concept of the voting system.
This is the cheapest you can get this specific player, of course a more expensive PS3 is going to have more features etc, but we're not voting on a ps3 deal are we? And who cares if you're not going to buy it? why waste your time posting that and even voting you sap.

Seriously I swear some of you sit at the computers with big shoes, a red wig and a big red nose, yes...clowns!

I know that this player will be discontinued from June read engadget.

of course it will, the BD-P1500 is due out, but hen why bother getting that when it will be replaced by the BD-P1600 presumably a few months later.

This is a good deal and it is available now.

I have to disagree. If you are looking for Blu Ray player now it HAS to be the PS3. Yes this is a good price for this player but the flaws in the product definately DO have to be taken account in voting a deal hot or not.

I agree

How do you upgrade it?

My dad just bought two and intends to buy another dvd player solely for multi region play this could save a world of hassle

No that's cool, i completely agree, from now on every bit of technology that is put on this site I will vote cold, because there's always going to be better technology somewhere, or in the near future...

What I was saying is, this is a bargain, for THIS SPECIFIC player, despite the flaws it may have and lack of future compatibility.

Also the the person who commented on my username...which was a bit weird. At least my name isn't about killing a cat.

Even someone who favours HD-DVD can see that any BR player that is stuck in the 1.0 past of it's technology is not worth buying. Especially when a PS3 seems to be £50 to 70 above the price of this player but has a lot more features to make that worth it. A PS3 seems worth buying for BR alone.

What if you hate games, have epilepsy and no arms, and you just want to watch films?:prop:

who cares about special features as long as you get the main feature

- Ummmm, well, ok.......... how about people who love film?

There are plenty of movie fans who are very interested in the interviews with the directors & actors, writers & love all the 'behind the scenes' & how it was made stuff etc etc.

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but to pretend that no-one's interested in movie extras is absurd
(and has only been doing the rounds recently cos, compared to HD DVD, Blu-ray can't do decent extras - well not until they get profile 2.0 discs and players out - right now the best they can offer is an updated interactive CD type thing).

From limited editions, special cuts and so-called ultimate editions it's pretty obvious by now that lots of people love their movies to come with lots of extras.

(Especially if you have just paid the kind of premium high def demands.)

BTW these Samsungs are (like all the Samsung Blu-ray players) well known for being buggy & problematic.

the only thing 1.0 players cant do is Picture in Picture & some extra java stuff...so that effects how many extras??

potentially some fancy menus, ****** games & the odd commentary only available in audio rather than video. hardly a loss even to movie buffs.

its like having a nice cake (profile 1.0) and having a nice cake with some writing on top and plastic adornement to jazz it up(profile 1.1/2.0)

does the cake taste any better? nope!

as for buggyness, all hd players be they tosh, sony, samsung, etc etc all have regular updates for the firmware, to take care of bugs etc, part of the deal with new technology im afraid, feel free to wait 5 years for the tech to settle and priced to hit £15 in asda, but if you wan tone now and dont want a ps3(cos itll look **** in your hifi rack/under your tv) buy one of these!

Voted cold due to it being version 1.0

its a solder on kit i believe, if you jhave some skills it 75 euros or you can pay extra for them to do it for you.

I thought the HiDef war was over and Blu Ray was being phased out due to high hardware prices and unfinished specifications that are making early blu ray players unable to play all the content from future films? I heard that HD DVD is the way forward and that even the very first HD DVD players have a finished standard without issues? Maybe the sooner blu ray dies off completely the sooner the war will be over and we can all enjoy HD DVD.

How many more future updates will there be? How many more players will you have to buy before BR stops "tweeking" the format. I dont remember this malarky with dvd players....

I would say profile 1.0 is more like having a cake 1.1 is the icing and 2.0 is the decorations.

Does it look and taste better - yes:-D.

So the 75 Euro mod needs to be installed by someone with good soldering skills and invalidates the warranty :w00t:

Doesn't the Blu Ray spec also have in it that the player will be bricked if the mod is detected :x.

thats not so funny cos clearly youve just shown you havent a clue what your on about.

Obviously you werent an early adopter, I had countless issues with my first panasonic A100, and then the A110 when they started introducing "new fangled" dual layer films at the tail end of 98... you were probably still enjoying video2000 at that time...

Ended up Panny replaced the units with A120s cos they couldnt get the early players to work....
