Very good price. Just watched Batman on Blu-ray and it is a fantastic picture.

Pretty much this price at a few places, available @ HP Direct for £179.33, also Dixons for £183.40.

Dixons + £5 postage (plus no free blu ray disc)

Can't find the Blu Ray player on the HP direct website, anyway the free BD disc is an Amazon offer so still works out better

At long last the price of buy-ray players seems to be slowly dropping ... Ok deal - I still think they need to hit the £100 mark before the masses will buy into them..........

You can get 3% quidco from Dixons too.
Still a good price so voted hot.

I won't be buying one until they can be made region free so I can play all my R1,2 and 4 dvd's on them (space issues under the TV).

The price is OK, but it's worth considering it's not profile 2.0, Firmware upgrades will almost certainly not allow an upgrade to profile 2.0 as even Sony models don't offer that upgrade path. So I'd still recommend getting the 80 pound or so PC LG drive that play Blu-ray and HD-DVD (allowing for some cheap purchases) as a better option for the time being.

Be interested to see a Play offer, when it comes

Would this play .mkv files if they were on a dvd ??

for that price u could build a media player to play bluray.

not bad find thouh.

not bad price , but still too many pennys for me. Agree with ramiuk1 on the build a media player or just get a popcorn hour or similar. i have at it plays everything i have thrown at it.

my m8 has the popcorn hour and he says its awesome

Yes and no, you need to use a program called TSmuxer which makes the file BD compliant. Only drawback is it'll only work with 16:9 videos

Bloody good price for a BD player, lowest ive seen so far, pretty good to say you get a free movie too. Being amazon i can imagine theres a voucher available too somebody could use

Good price. Just checked to see what Play have and they've got this Sony for £199.99 with 4 free films.

Does the Samsung play DIVX?

I wouldnt bother...

the ps3 is far better as it can play most formats off the HDD including MKV,TS,Divx etc....and its wireless...and
the HDD is easily upgradable..
u can pick new ones up on ebay for about £240 as plenty are selling there free ones from the mobile phone
contracts...

or stated above......the popcorn media player is about £140

Googling reveals some sort of media center (probably built using Linux). Can you get one in the UK?

I'm in terested in the hardware capability. Do you know if it actually does HD upscaling using software or hardware?

Cheers.

I was going to mention about the ps3 as well. Also the ps2 is upgradeable to allow blu-ray version 2.0 and any further versions they bring out making it future proof

This player is profile 1.1 and is Profile 2 ready. I think if you are after Dolby True HD etc then this player beats the PS3 in that respect.

Given stand alone PC internal drives cost 80-90 even at Ebuyer you could not build a 1080p DVI media centre that plays Blu-ray for that price.

You could however, if you have a media centre already equip it, get anyDVD and maybe a DVI graphics card for the price.

yes you could.
if it was purely for that reason and thats all you could, just have to shop aboput for parts

a £30 gcard can play 1080p, dual core as low as £30 now,even a 3400+ could handle 1080p
so its very possible

i dont think you can pick one up in uk yet, but there were some eurpean companys doing import , i got mine direct from popcorn after my long wait cost me £126 with the import duty , i belive the hd decoding id a software feature. best place for info is the popcorn hour forums. there are other alternatives also on the market now which may also be worth considering. take a look at media player section under av forums.

Why? The PS3 can decode Dolby TrueHD & DTS-MA as well.

Easy. Just update the firmware on the PS3 (wirelessly over the internet, or download from the PS3 site on a PC & transfer to PS3 using a USB stick)

Good Deal, Voted Hot Despite Negative Comments

Yeah, but I'm not sure if it can bitstream HD audio ?

True the PS3 can't bitstream the HD audio, but it can decode both Dolby TrueHD & DTS-MA & output as PCM.

Just been checking the specs for the BD-P1500 & it can't handle DTS-MA (which is whats used on pretty much all of Fox's Blu-rays).

Voted hot anyway as it's a good price, but if you've got a receiver that can handle both HD audio formats you might be disappointed.

You can barely get a HDMI (forgot DVI as that is not a fair comparison) graphics card, never mind having to add memory, capable CPU, PSU, hard drive, mainboard, case in a 100 pound budget given that 80 pound would need to remain for a decent Blu-ray drive and realistically anyDVD HD.

Particularly and it's an important point you want to build a near silent or passive media centre. Just chucking together a cheap PC, using the cheapest components and saying on paper it ought to run HD isn't a fair statement. I've been building media centre spec. PC's for years, using eBuyer, Aria, CCL, Quiet PC, and in practice getting the right parts to do the job properly is a headache. And when you consider the legit software already eats the budget it just isnt a valid argument to say you could honestly build a 1080p compliant, true media centre from scratch for the same price.

Internet connectivity and storage for downloadable content.

So you'll need to be able to have your player connected to your router somehow. This one has an rj45 socket, so network lead. I would imagine they'll start to appear with built in wifi after a while...
