Does anyone know what the difference is between an HDMI dvd player like this and a true HD-DVD/Blu Ray player ?

Yep more info here:

Looks good, probably won't come with a HDMI cable though & best to get a good one, so could cost £20 more for a cable.

This has on-board software that will take a normal DVD, aka the ones we buy now, puts it through the software and produces the picture in high def or near to. Edit: should also say that it will have HDMI connection which is the new scart connections but only better!

A HD-DVD/Blu Ray is as you say true HD but would take a true HD disc and play it at true HD rather than converting the picture, though I'm sure that machines coming out now will also "upsale" the picture.

Hope that makes sence without going all techie

An upscaling player takes an SD signal (DVD) and upscales it to simulate a HD signal (1080i/720p/1080p). It basically makes the best picture it can by trying to make an old SD disc the right res for a HD tv.

Its very debatable wether or not these have any effect at all. As if you feed your normal DVD via component to a HD tv then the panel will upscale the image anyway to make it suitable for the screen.

A HD DVD/Blu Ray player does not have to simulate the correct resolution as it outputs them directly from the disc. So with these the film is of higher resolution and the TV does not have make up lines that do not exist.

I bought an upscaling player earlier this year as I needed a player and could not stretch to £400+ for a HD DVD player. Now it was an improvement over the player it replaced but these players will not blow you away by any stretch (unless you have a proper cheapo DVD player).

£60 for this player is a good price and worth buying if you are playing the waiting game to see how the 2 formats fair over the next few months but if you have a 360 then you may as well add another few quid and get the HD DVD add on.

Also no 5.1 for surround sound

Pretty sure it does via Optical out, and via digital coax.

It will output 5.1 via optical or coaxial. Just means it doesn't have a full set of 6 analogue channel outputs.

Full spec here for anyone interested

Love the way it clearly states it doesn't support SACD/DVD-A discs but reads them at 4/8 speed respectively. Sorry, just nitpicking as i've nothing better to do right now.

So is there a scale of how well this player will upscale normal dvds or will they all produce the same quality.

Just seems a really good price if they all do the same job, or are some better than others?

Dilemna.

Have had a Samsung for about 6Mths Model ??119. It records onto Dash r/rw only and is terrible. It goes back to Tesco this week. (Paid about £68 for it.)

So not too sure about Samsung recorders but would be prepared to give this a go.

trouble is, Hard drive recorders are coming down all of hte time and I wondered if others buying this already have hard drive recorders on their freeview box or what. Otherwise why aren't we waiting for them to drop low enough to purchase? Just a thought, so don't shoot me down in flames, please.

In theory they all do the same thing, but in reality the Pannasonic S52 Sony S76 (I think thats the model) and one from a company called Oppo are better regarded than the samsung.

I have the Panny and can vouch for that one.

But this a pretty cheap, so you pays your money etc etc

And if you want something even cheaper, and very well specced, Aldi are still selling their £39.99 player...

HDMI, VGA, Scart RGB, S-Video, Component video outputs.

Audio 5,1 analogue 6 RCA outputs, Coax digital audio output.

Upscale via HDMI or Component to 480/576p, 720p and 1080i.

DivX playback.

Built in memory card reader, and for those brave enough, there is a site detailing how to add a USB socket to the player, as the hardware is there, it's just missing the port.

It maybe cheap, and from Aldi, but for the price and features you can't really complain.....

Oh, and can be made region free.

Cheers for the replies guys, very helpful, rep given.

Still not made my mind up yet, but maybe ill treat myself for xmas.

I would only get this if you have a really cheap dvd player or do not have one at all. If you've already got a decent dvd player then the upscaling may not show a noticeable difference. As someone has already said there are upscaling dvd players that will show a noticeable difference over your current standard dvd player but they are more expensive. The Denon DVD-1730 (rrp £150), Pioneer DV696AV (rrp £150) and the Cambridge Audio DV89 (rrp £200) were all highly recommended in T3 this month.

It did recommend the Samsung with 4 stars but as I said you may find that your lcd or plasmas will upscale the dvd picture just as well as the dvd itself.

Excellent post added rep, Thanks

Ive bought this as for the price I doubt it can be beaten, its in the back of my car so cant comment on performance and I'l be waiting until my HDMI cable delivered before trying it out. The player got a 5 STAR review by what hifi magazine.

to make it region free you do this;

Turn on the Player with no disc on the tray. The tv screen and the dvd lcd will display "No Disk"

2. Press the "Repeat" key on the Samsung remote control

3. Press the keys: "5 7 5 3 8" on the remote. Number 2 appears on the screen for a short time.

4. Press "9". Number 9 is displayed on the screen.

5. Press the "Open/close" button in the remote. The tray will open. Leave it open for a few seconds.

6. Just press the "On/off" button in the remote.

7. You now have a multi-region dvd player!!

Thanks sexymuffin for multiregion codes...my opinion is that even if the upscaling doesn't vastly improve the quality, at £59.99 you can't really get a better player for your money. It looks nice too which is always a bonus!

I bought it mainly for the DIVX feature. As im sick of converting files etc. Will be nice to just burn the file and watch it. Cant wait for new season of 24

Amazon have reduced price too.

]http//ww…ics

If you do the deal with the helmans book its delivered free and get a few more quid off.

The reviewers slate it a bit on amazon though.

Ive just taken it out of the box and tried it out using a cheapy scart cable. Impressed so far, picture quality is better than I expected compared to my previous DVD player a Toshiba which cost a few hundred quid couple of years back. I expect much better result with a HDMI lead and upscaling. Its a nice looking machine menus are nice and easy to click through - for the price its great. I have had a lot more expensive machines in the past that dont look or feel anywhere as near as nice

Re the comment about HDMI cables.

If you're quick you might still get a 2m HDMI cable from LIDLs for £4.99. They've had them in for a couple of weeks now and I thought they would have gone but noticed some still in the local store this afternoon. Use one myself and they are excellent quality.

If not the previous poster is correct - you could pay around £20.00 for an HDMI cable anywhere else.

LIDLs also doing Component cables for about the same price.

If you are after these from your LIDL then it will be worth asking at the TILLS in your Lidl - as in my store the cables were kept in the store room and only brought out on request.

There was NO indication on the shelves/labelling that this was their system - when I couldn't see any I just assumed they had sold out before I got there, but thought they just might have been postponed and spoke to a member of staff who said "ask at the tills as everything electronic tends to walk". Hence I got the £3.99 (from memory) component cables I had wanted.

If your looking for a HDMI cable ]this one for £3.29 will do you fine.

It makes me so angry when the OH's nan was buying the DVD-R135 the other day, and a salesman said that she needed a £80 HDMI cable to get the most out of it.

It was lucky that I was prepared for this, and told her to ask him if she would see any benefit uploading her pictures to her PC using a gold plated USB lead....

Thanks for the extra info guys :santa: Welcome to HotUKdeals all new members here :santa:

There's also a 3m HDMI cable at eBuyer ]http//ww…991 for £3.99 before postage

Does anyone know if i can get this dvd player to be price matched at currys and add extra discounts, as i need it ordered for my bros gf asap.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Just thought I would update on the HDMI cables. Went shopping in Lidls Taunton this morning and they still have 2m HDMI cables at £4.99 and 2.5m Component cables for £3.99. Both packages state they are 24 carat gold plated connector and contacts with individually shielded data wires so I'm assuming they wouldn't fib!! The HDMI lead has ferrite coils at both ends to reduce interference from high frequency sources (think microwaves, cordless phones, WiFi and Bluetooth) and also states it is for a max resolution of 1080i (higher than most current HD ready TVs - although one or two models are moving to 1080i).

The component cable package states it has 'lossless transmission' with extra thick shielding for optimum quality.

I'm using one of their HDMIs and it does seem to be good quality.

Lidls don't normally keep specials in longer than a week but these have been around for 3 or 4 weeks now.

Blast missed the offer, Price now £79.99

i bought the hd870 from pixmania at £54.00 newer than the 860 works great all you req is a good hdmi lead

Pixmania are also doing the latest Samsung 1080P7 for £64 delivered when purchased through Amazon .
