This looks very similar spec as the A8 2018, but without dual front camera? Slower CPU? Lower res screen?

Yip, the lower resolution wouldn't bother me if I'm saving £200, it'll have a decent camera for the price, and the cpu will do for most, this one in particular the Samsung hierarchy are really pushing as an alternative to the similar Snapdragon of this world that are so popular, the 660 - 710 etc.

You'd be saving about £100 against the A8 if you buy off ebay with the 2yr manufacturer warranty included (currently £299 from one seller). The CPU in the A8 doesn't look like it matches the 660, so I would think this will be weaker still (although with 720p it'll have less to do, as will the battery).

I'm just quoting most prices from retailers who have the A8 at an eye watering £399.

I still think that it will cope with most that is threw at it, but I don't want to defend Sammy too much

Yeah the A8 did start off with a silly price (like the A5 2017 before it. As you know, the A5 is now a much more sensible price). The A8 can now be had for less than a Nokia 7 Plus though, so it ought to be tempting with pretty reasonable reviews. Mind you, the screen ratio is main thing it has over the A5 really, so it depends largely on whether you care about Bezels. If you do and you have £200, then the A6 might be the one, otherwise for this price the A5 2017 is probably better except for battery life (same capacity battery but A6 might edge it with only 720p).
Screen resolution is crap for a 5.6 inch screen, there are phones offering minimum 400 ppi at £200 now.

Samsung budget phones don't really offer value for money, you're paying for the brand name here as it's pretty bang on average spec and camera here.

I'm guessing you've properly looked in to acquiring an A8 then? Would you have it over the XA2 or honor 9?

I don't think so, it's really not good enough over an A5 2017, so I'm tempted to go for that. But I don't think I will.

How so? the A8 does have a bigger screen but the camera isn't much of an upgrade according to reviews. The A5 is reasonable and I quite liked the one I helped a friend get... But I don't think enough to get me to bite.

I mean in your choice, not with the specs.

I think the problem is that noone in the mid range seems to currently be able to pull off a phone that has it all: decently tested software and good quality control, decent camera, reasonably priced for what it is
2 year old SOC, 720p screen, and the camera doesn't even have an auto HDR mode.

£200 imported. £80 more than it should be, just for the Samsung name.
Notice this is coming to Carphone warehouse but it's so new the link to it doesn't work yet...
