Do you know if that code will work against any of the other contract deals? I have tried a few but no joy.

Not a bad deal, but you can get the LG g3 for £144 less

Only 500MB data on that one though.

specs specs specs

THIS is exactly the point of the Alpha- Samsung is constantly facing criticism that it focusses too much on specs and not enough on user experience.

no one cares about specs. if you had a play with the alpha, had it taken away from you and were given the note, I guarantee you that you wouldn't even notice the difference in pixel density. 720p is more than sufficient on a 4.7' display, anything above this is unnecessary and manufacturers getting into a spec war (hence apple sticking to 720p displays in its iPhone)

The only problem with it is its unforgivably small battery- 1900mah isn't enough for a phone running touchwiz overlay and you'll struggle to get a day's use out of it. Also, a problem for some might be the lack of microSD expansion (I actually prefer this as microSD card slow down any phone significantly).

Overall, I'd say this phone is one of the very best of it's screen size on the market. This is a very good price and I commend Samsung for responding to criticism and taking this risk even if it is clearly their take of the iPhone 6.

what if you want a phone with premium metal build instead of plastic all round?
what if you want a phone that you can comfortably use in one hand instead of a 5.5' beast?
what if you're intelligent enough to realise that a QHD screen on a phone is a pointless feature (being a drain on processing power and battery life when the majority of people won't even notice the difference) and is just part of the 'android spec war'?
what if you don't want the lag associated with the G3?
what if you want a super slim phone instead of the 9mm G3?

If you want a phone this size, the Z3 Compact is the best out there and costs no more than the Alpha. The only thing better about the Alpha is the aluminium casing.

Can you list one single advantage of a metal phone case over a plastic one? I can't think of any.

The amount is the same, 1GB, the only difference is you can withdraw if from the bank quicker.

no but the whole idea behind 4g is streaming and watching videos etc

you can't do much with 1gb of data.

imagine you only get 1 hour of electricity a day. Having 1gb of 4g data is like upgrading your 23' tv to a 55' but not sorting out the electricity problem. Whats the point of having a 55' TV if you can only use it for 1 hour a day?

absolute rubbish, the g3 feels like a toy in the hand, not a £500 smartphone (the £200 price drop speaks for itself). a full metal unibodied phone such as the iPhone or m8 feels like you've just paid £500 for it- you appreciate the engineering that's gone into it and then there's that cold aluminium feeling you get when you pick up the phone in the morning.

what if you want a phone that you can comfortably use in one hand instead of a 5.5' beast?

for most people, a 5.5' screen is just too big even if there are super slim bezels

I can't stress this enough, the vast vast majority of people will struggle to notice any difference whatsoever even if you put them side by side, unless the know before hand that this phone has a 2k display and that one has a 720p display

Uh, what if you get 23 hours of mains electricity, and 1 hour solar.

Fine isn't it?

Same here, wifi at work, wifi at home, and the 1gb is plenty.

Wifi much better than 4g

If you are watching a video on YouTube for instance, the video doesn't run any quicker? A ten minute video will last ten minutes. Web pages load marginally quicker, I don't think u will cram much more in your lunch break. Anyway, it's irreverent as different people have different needs. I have wifi at home and at work, so only really use data whilst out to upload photos, WhatsApp etc, so 1GB of data is enough for me. As it was also when I had 3g.

People are looking at this the ‘wrong’ way:
It’s 1GB of data that happens to be 4G, it’s almost as if some people would be happier if it was 3G!

maxim24

The only thing significantly faster would be a large file download and assuming you get 50Mbs on 4G with a 1GB allowance that would only take 160 seconds to use the allowance.
So compared to say 3G at 10Mbs you save 640 seconds per month.
Personally I do large downloads in the background so it saves me no time unless it’s urgent which is rare and on a phone I’ve never had an urgent large download.

similar giff gaff 4g tarrif is 12 quid p/m so we could say that phone cost is 288. thats a good deal. 330 was the cheapest sim free price quoted recently. if you use the tube to commute and the free wifi with it then you might get by on 1gb. personally I prefer the flexibility of being able to leave a company for bad customer service. 2 year contracts are bad for competition

So you can't think of any practical reason why a metal casing would be better indeed.

They do feel bulky and heavier... Exactly what you don't want in a phone

Put a M8 next to an Lg G2 and you'll be shocked by the difference, and to find out the G2 has a bigger screen!

Have to say I laughed reading that... Cold aluminiun feel in the morning ? ok... Feel free to pay a premium to get a phone that looks like a brick. And add a bumper case on it?? Make it even bulkier and loose the cold feeling ?:)

Metal casing has no practical advantages, lots of disadvantages, it scrathces, it's heavy, it dents etc etc.

Already mentioned but isn't the z3 compact much better and cheaper? I could live with the specs if it was £13-15 a month, but not @ £24

I dont buy because of specs. I do alot of reading. Pdf.. Emails so the resolution comes in very handy as i dont have to keep scrolling the screen . i use the phone on landscape mode and when i type a message like on here on 720p screen i can't see what I'm typing(my previous phone was a 720p galaxy note 2). This isnt the problem on the g3.

I love the g3.. But it doesnt have a physical home button, stylus and amoled screen. Which is the reason i want the note 4

I think you're misunderstand what super high resolution screens are.

higher res screens will only make the text/keys smaller- you're talking as if it's just a larger screen but smaller text/keys does have downsides (e.g. harder to hit keys successfully and harder to read). There would be negligible difference as to how small you could make the text between a 1080p display and 2k display. In other words, text would be too small to read before you'd notice pixellation so 2k is actually just a gimmick. You could just zoom out on your 1080p display and it text would be just as small and you wouldn't notice any difference in sharpness unless you held the phones side by side a few inches from your eyes.
