But is there a cheaper deal than this? If people are prepared to pay this and it's cheaper/better value than anywhere else, then surely it's a deal?

No, you can get good phones for £200-300. You're paying £800 more for a slightly better camera, a faster gpu which will be handy if you want to run the battery down in an hour playing games, or you want to beta test the latest display technology and hope you don't get burn in or a yellow display after a few weeks. Most people would keep the cash, which is why smartphone sales are dropping.
As much as I'd love this phone,it's just greed on my part. The Note series hasn't improved enough to warrant this amount of money over the competition. As far as I'm concerned the Note 4 was the last decent phone in this series. They stopped updating it to force customers to replace it.
