For those a bit disappointed with the nexus 9, the Samsung tab s 8.4 might be a reasonable option.

I personally find 8.4 to be about the sweet spot and the 16:9 and SD card ideal for media and movies. Has an amazing screen and android 4.4.2 but with touchwiz and I have no idea about android 5.0. although personally, I am not fussed.

Very expensive for a tablet but seems to be the best 8.4 going and the time limited £50 voucher makes it a little more value.

I believe you can get this for £300 from a fulfilled by amazon seller, but £20 for another year warranty is good and I dont think the £50 applies. but if you would rather a 32gb SD card than the extra warranty, PC world and others will do the £50 voucher with a 32gb SD card.

BTW NO notification LED for some stupid reason!! but you can get noled to do a limited replacement with the AMOLED screen to conserve battery, a real pain for me though.

edit: and its about 1cm taller and 1cm wider than my nexus 7 and weighs the same. the nexus 9 is 425

GPU is lacking in this so not so good for games. However weight, RAM, SD slot and the high end AMOLED make it look the supreme tablet.

lacking gpu ??

Easily the best tablet you can buy right now

personally would rather pay £70 more and purchase a Dell xps 11 2 in1. Way more power, way more functionality. screen is also very good plus can also be used as an ultrabook if needed.

£300+ is too much to pay for an Android tab.

you can get this on Amazon for £285 but I'm with you I would rather buy it from John Lewis this will be Christmas present and yes this is the best around.

and no £50 play voucher from amazon alas. "Purchases from auction websites (e.g. eBay) or marketplace sales through retail websites (e.g. Amazon Marketplace or Play Trade) are specifically excluded from this Promotion. "

I am sort of with you on that one. The £50 voucher was the thing that made up my mind, ill spend that on music or apps so it is money back for me. Also, 8.4 and the weight is the big bonus, even the nexus 9 is 425g whereas this is the same weight as the nexus 7.

not for everyone by any stretch and I am still feeling a bit odd about spending so much for a tablet!

100%agree

is it more than twice as good as a HUDL2? I'm struggling to see past Tesco's tab for vfm.

perhaps even a tab pro 8.4?

Original Poster

honestly, if your looking at the hudl2 then probably not, no. The £50 google play time limited offer is the only reason I posted it.

Its hard to quantify value obviously, but for someone like me who uses a tablet for hours day then its value increases. The three year warranty is also a massive bonus as my nexus 7 did develop screen issues and was replaced at the 11 month. I have the peace of mind that while im spending out a lot, it will also be covered for 3 years if anything were to go weird.

the amoled screen, the weight and size is the advantage over the pro. worth it? I dont suppose so for most, but if you factor in the £50 voucher then the difference is £40. assuming you you would use the £50 on books or films or apps etc

I'd have gotten one of these boyos already were it not for the frankly rubbish year-old Exynos SOC they put in it. The good news is that the updated version with the latest Exynos 5433 as found in the Note 4 has already been announced for the South Korean market at least but i'm expecting it here before crimbo. The 5433 is a proper flagship tablet chip and this time the graphics are even faster than the Adreno 420 in the Snapdragon 805 rather than only half the speed of the previous gen Adreno 330.

Still over priced ...needs to be in at £250 or less..Me tinks daa Nexus 9 is betta choice. 8.9 hits da sweety spot but with 3 yr cover from JL wicked worth a punt but still expensive

I too 'upgraded' to this from my Nexus 7 2013 having bought into the 'best tablet in the world' bs. There are many aspects of the Nexus 7 I miss notification LED, soft home buttons, sleek looks, brighter display (yes that's right!) and less Samsung bloatware. I was going to sell the S 8.4 but I guess I should have done it sooner as the price has just dropped (doubtless because of the imminent Nexus 9).

Original Poster

personally, I have real issues going back to the nexus now. I put on nova launcher and its looks like stock with the crap hidden or disabled.

The cpu and gpu is fine, not sure if folk are getting confused with the tab pro. Its not top cutting edge, but that's maybe why they are throwing in the £50 play voucher to shift before the new models come out. Personally, I would rather the voucher as the power is more than enough for all the things I need it for.

The screen is fantastic, for media, web browsing and reading on. Very happy. Just switch any apps to black theme to save the battery life, which is good but not up there with the nexus 7. but it has the extra pixels to power and shift around. so no major complaints.

Shame this isn't the 4G version which Amazon sell for an extra £10.

The thing is slot people including clueless reviewers forget to mention or don't realise that the Samsung phones and tablets don't use the screen for the buttons so you get to use the full screen. This means that the nexus 9 screen is actually smaller for most tasks
