These are solid tablets. I've had an S2 for a couple of years and the only complaint I have is that the 32GB feels a bit limited once you have quite a few Apps on there. You can't move much to the expandable SD storage other than images and music files, so even though I've got 128gb SD in there, it's mostly empty.
I've owned one of these for a year now and I'm very happy with it. Its the lightest tablet you can buy and this makes prolonged use really enjoyable. The screen is also second to none. Its now running Android 7.

On the other hand, the light weight comes at the expense of the battery which is only 4000mah. Its not a fast tablet by any means but is very consistent. The FP scanner is nice to have on a tablet but its a first gen FP scanner, (you have to press once to turn on, and then its slow.)

There are 2 versions of the tablet. The 2015 has the Exynos CPU and the 2016 has a SD652. The 2015 has is a touch slower but has a better GPU and has TV out. The 2016 has no TV out whatsoever.

I had the original Tab S (10.5") which I recently smashed the screen on...... These have gone down in spec and the S3 is far too expensive for my liking! Does anyone feel it's worth a purchase?

If your after 8", OLED and 4:3, this is still the best Android tablet you can get. If you can make do with LCD or want 16:9, consider the Huawei M3 or Lenovo Tab 4 8 plus.

Yep it's chasing the dragon now

How does this compare to the 10.1" Galaxy Tab A? I know the Tab is a lot bigger, and newer, but is this one faster? How does battery life compare?

The Tab A is a budget/mid range device. The S is top of the range. For 8" that means the S2, for 9.7" that means the S3. Battery life if probably better on the A as the S2 is thinner and lighter with a more hungry and faster CPU.
Fantastic tablet.
Got 9.7 inch 2015 model with LTE for £192 from O2 Refresh around 18 months ago. Also had an 8 inch version for £120 from O2 Refresh as well, but sold it for just over £200. Personally I would pay extra for 9.7 inch as it has a significantly bigger battery, 5870 mAh if I recall correctly which does give a significant improvement over 8 inch version, even after 18 months with 6hrs on screen I have 48% battery left as I just reset it to factory settings after 18 months of continuous use and it's brilliant. Only really charge it like twice a week.

EDIT:

Having read some comments, the fingerprint reader works really well for me. The trick is to register it in various different positions as it's not as intuitive and catching as say a 2nd gen Apple fingerprint reader, but once you registered it accurately in various positions mine works very quickly and rarely ever need to try it again.

I thought you can install games/apps anything basically on MicroSD storage since Android 5.0 or perhaps even earlier, at least I was able to back in the day, but don't find the need of doing so in this tablet as I don't play games anymore so 32GB is plenty with something like Google Drive.
Any news on Pixel C as ex iOS I'm Pure Android or nothing.
Pixel C is dead. Google sticking to the Pixel Book only now

Thanks!
Shame.
Still a fantastic tablet. Beautiful screen. I also own the S3, which is fantastic with the stylus and feels more premium. But the s2 is a no brainer at this price, and it still is a premium tablet.

I recommend the official Samsung case against scratches too, it's really nice how it snaps into the back of the tablet and it feels really well made.

Some of the app files yup, but most of them don't seem to transfer fully even if you "move to SD". It's a bit odd.

Is that due to the format of your sd?
Got this last week from Samsung store. Not really sure about it! We I was setting it up, I felt the tablet getting warm And last night I was watching an episode of Black Mirror and again, the tablet got rather warm! I have not got a case for it yet, as I wanted to make sure I was keeping it first. Now I'm not sure. Doies anybody else's S2 get warm under load?
I have had one of those for more than 2 years, and very happy with it.

Premium feel/construction, 8" is the perfect size, great screen, good speed etc.
Was £209 in tesco a few days ago

Slightly random Q. But do the soft keys (buttons right & left of home button) light up on your tab like the older S3/S4 mobile phones?

It's a lottery as to what will move and what won't. The real annoyance is that the app moves back to internal storage every time it updates. So you spend your entire life moving them back and forth.

Seems to be the going price for the 9.7inch.
Solid tablet. Swapped to Samsung after buying the Samsung S8 was really happy with it. I stupidly smashed my Ipad mini 2 screen that I have had since 2013. I changed to one of these, its a solid, quick tablet I would rate on par if not better than the Ipad. Bargain.
Does anybody have any recommendations for a half-decent tablet in the £100 price range? I just need one for watching videos, reading books and install apps like Evernote to save key bits of text. I'm sure this one is good, but it's probably far more than I need for the task. My other half has a tablet, but it was too cheap and is prone to crashing / rubbish battery.
Wanting a high refresh rate tabby. This is tempting though.

Looks a brilliant buy. Being 4:3 it is way bigger than 7" 16/9:10 tablets.

Plus it is Amoled, putting it high into the premium category.
Battery lacking though.
Tesco, AO, Currys, Samsung also selling for £229. Appears to be a big sell off, so sick shouldn't run out. Do I, Don't I. Damn you Samsung 🤣
anything similar with 4G LTE?
Weird how this is getting some serious heat at £229 but the tab s2 9.7 didn't get much heat at £230/240 in the ebay 20% sale!
