Really want to try a folding phone but I can’t live with the constant fear of it breaking

I had a really bad experience with the fold 2 and so have a few others. The company Samsung uses to fix phones (tmtfirst) have been damaging them on purpose in order to get people to pay for repairs. Samsung would not do anything to help in this situation, they did not care at all. Feel free to read the reviews of that company, I thought my case was isolated at first, unfortunately was not.

I got the flip 4 when it came out in September, been very happy with it so far.  It's quite sturdy but the factory-fitted screen protector has started to show a visible crease where the screen folds in half.  It doesn't really bother me or affect my use of the phone, just slightly concerning since it hasn't been long at all.   The phone feels at times slower than my xperia 5 ii that I was using previously. Despite this, it's still a fun and innovative gadget.

Just to share my experience for those on the fence.
Ordered a beige very good condition at £729 considering good condition is only 12 months warranty @ £699 so thought it's worth the punt for the extra £30 and extra 6 months warranty (very good condition is 18 months warrantyi).
Phone came in Giffgaff box with usb c cable and SIM removal tool.
Phone has arrived spotless pristine mint condition with both original screen protectors still intact. If anything, the front screen protector had some marks, which I can't even classify as scratches, just needed wiping off.
Very impressed and happy with my purchase especially when klarna is offering 24 months interest free if you're after this phone then it is a no brainer deal considering the RRP.
Imeicheck website shows still in Samsung warranty till July 2024. All around a win!
Furthermore, ordered at around 11pm last night and arrived today at 1pm.
Amazing service and speedy delivery from Giffgaff..
    Thanks a lot

I keep coming back to the fold 👀 Currently on s21 ultra and not fancying the s23 as want something different. Is it worth going for the fold 4 or hanging fire til the fold 5? Trying to get best for buck but don't want to jump and a deal comes out a couple of months later. Arghhh 🙈
    davidoriordan1's avatar
If you can hold fire for a few months and this will be your first foldable then I would say it will be worth it. By August we should have the Honor Magic VS, the Google Fold, Z Fold 5, Mi Mix Fold 3 all either launched to market or else formally revealed in terms of specs/price. Should make the picture much clearer once you have a few more options. The Chinese companies are really pushing hardware innovation in terms of slimness, eliminating the hinge gap and the screen crease and offering a more standard phone-like aspect ratio on the front screen - could really push Samsung to up their game.
I am only tempted to jump on this myself as I am coming from a Z Fold 2, and while it is still running fine I am aware any trade in/sale value will only decrease as all of the above become available so maybe worth an incremental jump for me at this point to the 4 at the refurb price. (edited)

Got a fold 4 good condition today. Excellent with no scratches whatsoever. First fold and kind of afraid everytime I have to open it. Any case suggestions? (edited)

The only case suggestion I have is the genuine one, it's bloody expensive, but every other case I tried added extra bulk and took up too much space on the outer display.

Got the Z Fold4 £699 delivered today. Was not too sure what condition it will but turned out to be really good. No marks at all and still in warranty having registered with Samsung. The packaging could have been better!

Thank you MrSwitch for finding this deal, much appreciated.

I bought an excellent and it was in really bad state, deep scratches on the screen and edges. Very inconsistent in their grading

For all the doubters, I am on my 3rd Fold and haven’t had a single failure. I have never had an issue with battery performance but that said, I don’t use it for gaming. Absolutely love it for watching Netflix, Prime etc… on planes and trains and I find the photo quality to be great. I have just received an S23 Ultra and whilst there is clearly greater quality on the photos when you zoom in it wouldn’t sway me.

As far as the weight is concerned, I can’t argue that it is a heavy unit but it is only 30g heavier than the Ultra. The upside is that it is a lot easier to fit in pockets of jeans and jackets where the Ultra would just stick out.

With the exception of taking and making calls I pretty much open it every time I use it. Great for emails and spreadsheets if you use it for work.

If you don’t have Android Auto in your car, this is great for getting an appropriate mount and using for maps etc.. in the car.

As far as the risk of damage is concerned, I would recommend getting a Nationwide Flexplus account. I have used them 4 times over the past few years for 1 theft, 1 loss and 2 damages (across the whole family) and they have been faultless. It only costs £13 per month which seems great value for peace of mind. I think Lloyds do something similar for £10 per month but I can’t vouch for that.

You forgot to mention excess on Nationwide insurance. And I believe they raised it again.

Very tempted to buy this and ditch the Pixel 7 Pro but do I really need to change so soon?

How is pixel going? Thinking to upgrade from my Samsung s22+. Just need a user opinion

Flip or Fold? I've not had either. Which should it be?

    1. Flip?
    2. Fold?

Make an assessment. I'm thinking Fold. (edited)
    ShamWow's avatar
Fold, different way of using a phone. I had a flip for a little bit and just felt it was more of a fashion statement than anything practical

I brought a z fold 3 mint condition for £550 not bad tbh if it goes well in time will get the later versions
  14. samcawthra's avatar
someone tell me why i shouldnt buy this?
    DealTron's avatar
its big & heavy and you will be end up using external screen most of the time. so no real use of bigger screen.
  15. bilalbilal's avatar
If someone was to buy this via Klarna and then didn't like the condition, is it the same process to return? And would it affect the credit rating?
  16. t4r's avatar
I was hoping the S23 event would have reduced the prices of some of these phones. Might hold out for a bit to see if the flip comes down soon.
Good price for them at the moment in this deal, thank you
  17. _Damian_'s avatar
I wonder if they are using a different screen protector on the Flip 4... all our Flip 3 (3 of them) went back for replacement as the screen protector was peeling off
  18. Ilovedesign's avatar
The question is will i get a much better deal on the fold than this before the new one in August
    CTTSpicketston's avatar
Of course, phones always drop in price the closer they get to being updated. What your definition of 'much better' is only you know.
  19. face-crab's avatar
Not saying you'll have the same experience but I picked up the Xperia 1 IV from giffgaff in 'good' condition and it looked like it came straight out of the factory, not so much as a fingerprint on it.
    ohsomeonenew's avatar
Can’t be sure as I ordered good condition iPhone 12 Pro and it was scratched up. This is not a very old phone so chances are higher though

I'm not sure about the paint peel on mine. For grade B I was expecting better. Screens look good though and original screen protector was still on. Think I'm going to send this one back.
    bilalbilal's avatar
Yes, would return it. Mine was immaculate
  21. Ilovedesign's avatar
Idk whether to buy this or wait until the fold 5.
    bilalbilal's avatar
Buy it. I don't regret my purchase at all!!!! The fold 5 will be double this price new and still all the way to August to wait.
  22. Infiniteey's avatar
My very good/B grade Fold 4 arrived today. Not a scratch on it, even the screen protector and edge film hadn't been removed!
First refurb phone i've bought. Might do this from now on.
Only slight issue is I ordered black but grey arrived. O well.
    bilalbilal's avatar
It won't be grey, it will be what Samsung call green! But as mentioned in previous posts, the black has a paint peeling issue, so that's a good thing can you check the manufacturing date in Imeicheck website? It'll tell you how old/new the phone is

See I don't see the point in this phone as it's not small and it's really thick when folded. A woman has one that I see walking her dog every day and it's much bigger than I thought.... You're not saying pocket space with it. So I'm rather phones like the iPhone Mini's, but sadly Apple canned them and no one on Android is doing those sized phones either.
    J2022's avatar
I've had my fold 2 for about 18 months. I can never see me going back to a 'normal' phone, everything is so much better on a large screen, even to the point i no longer bother loading my laptop up, and the convenience of just using the outer screen for quick things or save battery life. You get used to the weight, though it is quite bulky especially with a case
  24. drumboe's avatar
Anyone know if these models are dual sim?
    Amirzeny's avatar
    Yes the Fold 4 is
  25. davidoriordan1's avatar
Can anyone please vouch for the usual state of giffgaff refurbs? I'm tempted by the Fold 4 Very Good condition - screens pristine is the main thing but have people had experience of the 'light marks' on the body they refer to? Also do they tend to come with original packaging, usb-c cable or is it just the phone on it's own in a generic box?

EDIT: Sorry, never mind this - I did not see the most recent comments which basically answered my questions (edited)
  26. the.porter's avatar
The fold is the only phone what might tempt me away from the 14pm,but only the fold 5 which looks on paper an exciting prospect roll on august for a play

Finally pulled the trigger on a very good fold 4 beige. Finally time to replace my Poco f3 even though it still works as it should. Fancies something different. Hopefully it's as new as got the last one in that colour
    deleted2702932's avatar
Just arrived. Very good my ass. Inner screen has an indentation bottom left of crease and around 10 scratches on front and a nice corner dent where it's been dropped. No thanks Giffgaff.
