Samsung HD204UI Spinpoint F4 2TB Hard Drive SATAII 32MB Cache - OEM

While other 2TB drives split their collection of bytes over four 500GB platters, Samsung's Spinpoint EcoGreen HD204UI F4 features three 667GB disks. This means the new platters boast the world's highest areal density at the moment.
The 3.5-inch F4 is intended to replace Samsung's four-platter F3 drive, and has otherwise similar specs. The drive is bolstered by a 32MB buffer, and the platters spin at 5400rpm, rather than the 7200rpm rotational speed of some other 2TB desktop drives

The new three-platter drive also cuts down on power consumption. The F4 eats 23 per cent less electricity in standby mode than its predecessor. The drive will remain quiet while it's ticking away, taking advantage of the company's SilentSeek and NoiseGuard technologies. The new Spinpoint HD204UI F4EG also supports Native Command Queuing

How about a price in the title for us "text only" guys?

Anyone had this drive a while and found it fine?

Just every time this deal is posted I hear people saying don't get it because of the firmware problem stuff and warranty etc

Real tempted and need the space though!

Firmware's only an issue on drives produced last year, warranty's only an issue if it's a grey import.

I thought both ebuyer and scan were the grey imports

They are, the 3 year warranty is provided by Ebuyer (have phoned them to confirm in the past, as have other people).

I've had one of these since November. Never had a problem, pretty much silent and nice and fast for a 2TB too. If you need a new boot drive though go with a 1TB or below.

do these have problems with Nas's then?

Good price, but cold as it's the same price at Amazon, and I think were unanimous that their customer service is second to none.

Prefer to get from Amazon. Hot price though. 2TB were £100 a year ago. Another year and they will be £40.

not all NAS's will have the issues
also not all drives will need the firmware update - some already have it on them.
its all to do with 4k sectors i own 8 of these drives my first 4 needed the update (well actually they worked fine in my NAS but i updated the firmware for peace of mind) the last 4 i purchased already had teh latest firmware lvl.

@ sosages , just curious how you can tell they had the latest firmware on when the updated firmware has the same firmware code ??

also warrenty isnt a issue if a grey import as the company has to provide the 3 year warrenty if samsung dont , i've always bought from scan and had 3 year warrenty's on all hard drives with them , cause they have to cover it ,

I have two of these to store all my dvds. I applyed the update anyway just to be safe, easiest way I can think of is put file on flash drive, boot from a windows 98 cd then go to C:which will be your flash drive and execute. Works in seconds and doesn't effect data on the drive achi or not, nothing to worry about and very easy to do..

he ones with no three year warranty have a Z in the model number which isn't these so these should come with a three year from samsung..Great drives, really quet thanks to the 5400rpm so great for media use, definatly would buy again.

well i got one's with z in from scan , and they do come with three year warrenty direct with scan same as all ther drive's. so i don't know where you people are getting your info from

Just bought 2 of these from Scan in their weekends "Today Only" deal. £107.99 for the two delivered. Already have one in my Windows Home Server and it's been fine.

Is there any "recommended" 2TB HDDs for NAS/Home Servers by users?

Yeah these, low power, quick, reliable. Anything manufactured this year should be fine, it's only a 2 min FW update anyway.

I believe the z means international, the only other option is jp which is Japanese. So these drives will be z. The only way to tell for certain if a drive is covered by Samsung is putting the serial number of the HDD into the warranty checker on the Samsung website, Samsung UK will only guarantee products supplied by Samsung UK. That said if it's not you're well within your rights to send it back, although I'd trust either Scan or Amazon to just take them back, eBuyer not so much.

1. i think you can tell by manufactured date
2. running certain commands via telnet allow me to see that the newer drives have the same settings ..stuff like Disk /dev/sda: 2000.3 GB, 2000397852160 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 243201 cylinders, total 3907027055 sectors
etc..
4k sector drives and NAS's do play nicely but often need latest NAS firmware.

generally recommended drives are enterprise models (normally at least double the price)

But do they offer a 3 years warranty? Scan clearly state they do.

It says so on this one.

What's wrong with the Western Digital that has 64mb cache and is 7200rpm for £2 more?

Do you have a link to the Western Digital Drive?

cold, same price at amazon. ebuyers returns procedure for hdds is very time consuming and quite expensive.
